Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Syndicate Matriarch

The roar of the truck's engine signaled our departure just as a bright white searchlight swept across the snow-covered stables.

"Stop that vehicle!" a voice boomed through the courtyard speakers, the sound of heavy footsteps running down the gravel driveway echoing through the storm.

I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, the heavy four-wheel drive catching the icy road beautifully as we crashed through the wooden side gates of the property.

Behind us, the headlights of two massive black SUVs exploded into the darkness, their high-intensity beams tracking our path down the winding mountain pass.

"Where are we going, Travis?" Eleanor panicked, her hands gripping the dashboard as the truck skidded dangerously near the cliff edge.

"We're going to the one place my father never expects me to go, Eleanor," I said, my teeth clenched as I navigated the black ice.

"The old logistics office downtown. The place where he keeps the physical ledger for the Delaware trust."

By 2:15 a.m., the truck pulled up behind the abandoned glass tower overlooking the frozen river.

The lock on the secondary entrance was ancient, giving way with a loud, metallic snap as I used the heavy iron crowbar from the truck's toolbox.

We stepped into the dim, cold foyer, the air smelling of old paper and dust—everything my father's luxury estate was not.

I walked straight toward the hidden floor vault behind the main desk, using the master code my father had forced me to memorize when I was sixteen.

The steel door clicked open, revealing a single, bound leather ledger paired with a series of bank certificates carrying my biological mother's original, unendorsed signature.

"He didn't alter her identity to protect the assets, Eleanor," I said, my voice completely cold as I read the final lines of the text.

"He did it because her father was the primary holder of the original shipping licenses. He needed her alive just enough to sign the annual renewals."
