Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Syndicate

At 9:00 AM the following morning, the primary media briefing room at St. Jude’s Hospital was packed with journalists, news crews, and local police representatives.
Monica Valleti stood at the mahogany podium, wearing a dark silk dress, her eyes artistically rimmed with tears, holding a handkerchief against her nose.
"My husband, Tristan Valleti, lies in an intensive care unit because of absolute negligence," Monica sobbed into the microphones, her voice trembling with rehearsed sorrow. "The Alabaster Restaurant served a poisoned dish meant for our family, and we will not rest until every person involved in that kitchen is brought to justice!"
Her father, a heavy-set man in an expensive suit, stood behind her, nodding grimly for the cameras.
"That's a very convincing performance, Monica."
The heavy double doors at the back of the press room swung open.
Corbin Valleti walked down the center aisle, flanked by four federal marshals and two city homicide detectives.
Right beside Corbin, wearing a clean, crisp navy suit, her posture straight, her head held high, walked Paige Lawson.
The camera flashes exploded across the room like lightning. Journalists scrambled to capture the scene as Monica’s face went completely, deathly pale.
"Corbin...?" Monica stammered, stepping back from the podium, her handkerchief dropping to the floor. "What... what is this? Who is that woman?"
"This is Paige Lawson," Corbin’s voice boomed through the quiet room, carrying an iron authority that commanded total silence. "The server who watched you poison my mother’s dessert last night."
"What?!" Monica shrieked, her voice turning shrill and hysterical. "She’s lying! She’s an eleven-dollar-an-hour waitress trying to extort our family!"
"We don't rely on verbal testimony alone, Mrs. Valleti," the lead federal marshal announced, stepping up to the podium and placing a tablet on the glass top.
The projection screen behind the podium lit up, displaying the high-definition reflection footage showing Monica’s exact hand movements over the panna cotta, paired with the forensic lab analysis matching the poison in her purse to her husband's blood samples.
The room erupted into absolute bedlam. Reporters shouted questions, camera operators rushed forward, and news anchors began broadcasting live updates.
Monica backed away toward the side exit, but two female federal officers stepped into her path, pulling steel handcuffs from their belts.
"Monica Valleti," the lead officer declared, "you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and distribution of a controlled substance."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Monica’s wrists, she looked at Paige with pure, unadulterated hatred.
Paige stood her ground, meeting Monica’s gaze with a calm, unshakeable dignity that no amount of money or high-society pretense could ever diminish.
