I dropped the handle of my silver suitcase, the wheels letting out a short rattle as it settled into the scattered foam.

"Brin, you need to understand the structural context of those photos," I said, taking a slow step toward her.

"I understand that you sold my security data to the Salcedo family," she said, her voice dropping into a flat, clinical whisper.

She pulled off the blue rubber gloves, throwing them onto the pile of torn mattress filling between us.

"You told me you were protecting me from your world, Cormack, but you were just clearing the board for your new acquisition."

"The baby," I stammered, my eyes falling to her stomach, which was no longer rounded. "The nurse at Northwestern said you went into sudden, early labor before the gurney reached the theater."

"And her medical chart doesn't carry your family name, Hale. It carries mine."

The realization struck me like a physical blow, my confident posture dissolving as I looked at the hidden ledger of cash she had uncovered.

The money wasn't an offshore reserve for our future.

It was a pre-arranged exit payout from Aurelio Salcedo, a multi-million-dollar bounty for my complete withdrawal from the northern shipping lines.

"You didn't leave me to keep me alive," Brin whispered, standing up slowly from the floor. "You left because my father’s dojo trust was the only thing standing between you and the master registry."
