Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The warehouse stood twenty minutes outside the city.

The new red door was locked.

Luke examined the electronic panel.

“Someone has been here recently.”

“How recently?” Jack asked.

“Today.”

Noah looked at Emma.

“Stay behind us.”

Emma shook her head.

“I'm done staying behind everyone.”

They entered.

Inside was not an abandoned warehouse.

It was an archive.

Rows of locked cabinets filled the building.

Boxes carried dates.

Names.

Company numbers.

Some went back twenty years.

Emma touched one.

“Mom knew about this.”

Jack nodded.

“She built this.”

Noah looked surprised.

“What?”

“Mom wasn't just investigating.”

Jack's voice was quiet.

“She was collecting evidence.”

Luke opened a cabinet.

Inside were copies of bank statements.

Photographs.

Contracts.

And dozens of letters.

Then he found a sealed envelope.

Emma's name was written across it.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph of her mother standing beside a young Emma.

Emma was perhaps twelve.

Her mother was smiling.

On the back were six words.

I tried to keep you safe.

Emma's eyes filled.

“She knew.”

Noah stepped closer.

“She knew this would come back.”

Luke suddenly stopped.

“Guys.”

They turned.

He was looking at a monitor.

A live security feed.

Someone was inside the warehouse.

Not outside.

Inside.

The camera showed a woman walking between the shelves.

She wore a gray coat.

Emma stared at the screen.

“No.”

Jack stepped closer.

“Who?”

Emma couldn't speak.

The woman turned toward the camera.

It was her mother.

Eleanor Hayes.

Alive.

Emma dropped the photograph.

Jack grabbed her arm.

“Emma.”

“She died.”

Noah stared at the screen.

“That can't be her.”

Luke zoomed in.

The woman looked older.

Her hair was gray.

But the face was unmistakable.

Emma whispered:

“Mom.”

The monitor went black.

A door slammed somewhere in the warehouse.

Jack ran toward it.

“Wait!”

They followed.

A hallway led to a small office.

The door was open.

Inside sat an older woman.

She looked up.

Emma stopped.

The woman stood.

“Emma.”

Her daughter couldn't move.

“Mom?”

Eleanor nodded.

Emma began crying.

Not the quiet tears she had shed at the hotel.

These were years of grief collapsing at once.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Because I had no choice.”

Emma crossed the room.

Then stopped.

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You watched me cry.”

Eleanor's eyes filled.

“I watched from a distance.”

Emma's voice broke.

“How could you?”

“Because the people who killed my reputation were willing to kill you.”

“Who?”

Eleanor looked toward the door.

“Richard.”

Emma stared.

“He wasn't alone.”

“Who else?”

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said:

“Daniel's father.”

Emma frowned.

“He's dead.”

“Yes.”

“But he died fifteen years ago.”

“He didn't die when you think he did.”

The room went silent.

Eleanor explained.

Daniel's father had faked his death after discovering the operation was larger than he imagined.

Richard had helped him disappear.

For years, he had operated through shell companies.

Eleanor had discovered the truth.

When she tried to expose him, he arranged her “death.”

But Eleanor survived.

She went underground.

She continued collecting evidence.

Then she discovered something worse.

Daniel had unknowingly inherited control of the trust connected to the operation.

That made him valuable.

And vulnerable.

Emma sat down.

“So Daniel isn't the mastermind.”

“No.”

“He's being used.”

“Yes.”

Emma thought about Vanessa.

“What about Vanessa?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“She isn't who you think she is either.”

Emma frowned.

“She's Richard's niece.”

“Yes.”

“She's been sleeping with my husband.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Eleanor reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a photograph.

Vanessa stood beside Richard.

But there was something else.

A little girl stood between them.

Emma stared.

“That girl…”

Eleanor nodded.

“Vanessa's daughter.”

“Where is she?”

“That's the problem.”

Eleanor's expression changed.

“She disappeared three months ago.”

Emma stood.

“Vanessa has a child?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't she tell Daniel?”

“She was afraid.”

“Of Richard?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Of Daniel's father.”

Then the warehouse lights went out.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

“Enough.”

Emma froze.

The voice continued.

“You've been looking for me for years.”

Eleanor whispered one name.

“Edward Mercer.”

May you like

Daniel's supposedly dead father.

Then the warehouse doors locked.
