Chapter 7 - THE SECRET VANESSA WAS HIDING

The emergency lights flickered on.
Edward Mercer appeared on the security monitor.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Emma stared.
“He's alive.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Edward spoke through the speakers.
“I never wanted Emma hurt.”
Jack stepped toward the monitor.
“Then why did you destroy her family?”
“I didn't.”
“You manipulated Daniel.”
“I protected my son.”
Noah looked at Emma.
“That's not an excuse.”
Edward continued.
“Richard became obsessed with control.”
“He used your company.”
“He used me.”
“And Daniel?”
“He used Daniel too.”
Emma's voice shook.
“Then why let Daniel destroy my marriage?”
Edward was silent.
Then he said:
“Because I needed Daniel to believe Vanessa was the only person he could trust.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Everything shifted.
The affair hadn't been random.
It had been engineered.
But that didn't erase Daniel's choices.
He had still cheated.
Still lied.
Still slapped her.
Still humiliated her.
Edward continued.
“Vanessa was instructed to stay close to Daniel.”
Emma looked at Eleanor.
“Why?”
“To keep him away from Richard.”
Noah frowned.
“That's backwards.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Because Richard wanted Daniel removed from control of Mercer Holdings.”
Emma understood.
If Daniel lost control, Richard could seize the trust.
Vanessa had been assigned to keep Daniel emotionally dependent.
But somewhere along the way, the arrangement had become real.
That made it more complicated.
Luke spoke.
“Where is Vanessa now?”
Edward answered.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I won't tell you.”
Emma stepped toward the monitor.
“She has a child.”
Silence.
Edward's voice changed.
“Yes.”
“Is the child safe?”
“Yes.”
“Then why hide her?”
“Because Richard is looking for her.”
Emma looked at Eleanor.
“What does the child have?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
“The original Mercer trust.”
Emma remembered the bracelet.
Vanessa had worn it.
Not the bracelet itself.
The clasp.
Luke suddenly understood.
“The bracelet.”
Emma turned.
Luke opened his laptop.
“The bracelet wasn't just jewelry.”
He pulled up photographs.
The bracelet had a hidden compartment.
A tiny engraved number was inside.
17-04.
Warehouse seventeen.
Fourth cabinet.
Noah looked at Emma.
“That's where the trust records are.”
But there was another problem.
Vanessa had the bracelet.
And Daniel had given it to her.
Which meant Daniel unknowingly carried part of the secret.
They found Vanessa at a hotel across town.
She was sitting beside a little girl.
The child was seven.
Her name was Sophie.
She had brown hair and a yellow raincoat.
When Emma entered, Sophie looked frightened.
Vanessa stood.
“Emma.”
Emma looked at the child.
“She's yours.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Her name is Sophie.”
Sophie held Vanessa's hand.
Emma crouched slightly.
“Hi, Sophie.”
The girl looked at her.
“Are you Aunt Emma?”
Emma froze.
“How do you know me?”
“Mom has your picture.”
Vanessa looked away.
Emma stood.
“Why did you let Daniel think you were alone?”
“Because Richard said Sophie would disappear if I told anyone.”
Emma's expression softened.
“You should have told me.”
“I didn't know if I could trust you.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard told me you were working with your brothers to destroy Daniel.”
Emma shook her head.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know now.”
She removed the bracelet.
Then she handed it to Emma.
“Daniel gave me this.”
Emma looked at it.
“He thought it was just a bracelet.”
“It isn't.”
Luke opened the clasp.
Inside was a tiny metal strip.
A key.
Noah stared.
“The trust.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Sophie has the other half.”
Everyone looked at the child.
Sophie reached into her yellow raincoat.
She pulled out a small silver locket.
“My grandpa gave me this.”
Emma looked at Vanessa.
“Edward?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me never to lose it.”
Luke examined the locket.
It contained a second key.
Together, the pieces formed a code.
The final trust could be opened.
But before they could leave, Sophie looked at Emma.
“Mom said Uncle Daniel is bad.”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
Emma sat beside the girl.
“Your mom was scared.”
Sophie nodded.
“Is Uncle Daniel going to hurt us?”
Emma looked at Vanessa.
Then she answered honestly.
“No.”
Sophie relaxed.
Then the little girl whispered:
“Grandpa said Uncle Daniel doesn't know what he did.”
Emma froze.
“What did Daniel do?”
Sophie shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a folded drawing.
It showed a red door.
Three men stood outside.
One was Richard.
One was Edward.
The third looked like Daniel.
May you like
But underneath Daniel's figure, Sophie had written:
He was there.
