Chapter 3 - THE BROKEN TRUST

The transition from a broken, grieving father back into the protective guardian of my family's remaining legacy was instantaneous and absolute.
While the clinical staff scrambled to verify the validity of the court order, I stood in the corridor, my body a solid, unyielding barrier in front of Room 512.
My ex-wife, Monica, walked down the hallway, her designer heels clicking loudly against the polished floorboards, her expensive wool coat looking sharp and cold.
Beside her walked her new partner, Marcus, his custom suit immaculate, his hand clenching a leather folder that contained the regional estate trust files.
"Get out of the way, Ethan," Monica said, her voice dropping into a low, calculated frequency that carried no remaining human warmth.
"The judicial review has finalized the decision, and the medical board has certified that there is no clinical benefit to continuing this preservation."
"We are here to execute the estate liquidation, and your signature is no longer required under the corporate conservatorship terms."
"The conservatorship was built on a series of forged signatures and false clinical diagnoses, Monica," I said, my voice dropping.
"And by entering this hospital with your lawyers today, you have officially walked into the trap my father prepared three years ago."
Julian stepped out of the room behind me, his small hand resting against my side as his quiet presence instantly drew Monica's focus.
"Why is that street child standing near my daughter's room?" she hissed, her eyes narrowing with a sudden, primitive flash of recognition.

"Because he is the primary trustee of the Vance Legacy Fund," I replied, a freezing, absolute clarity settling behind my eyes.
"The fund you have been trying to plunder to cover Marcus's failed real estate developments in Seattle."
