Chapter 4 - THE LEGAL SIEGE

The early morning sun of a chilly Monday did nothing to warm the frosted glass windows of the municipal court building where the emergency hearing was held.
I sat at the wooden prosecution table, my posture rigid, my fingers locking together over the thick folder of forensic banking records my father had hidden.
Beside me sat my older brother, Arturo, a senior partner at the state's largest corporate litigation firm, his face a cold mask of determination.
"They have spent three years systematically siphoning the pension reserves from the family maritime trust, Ethan," Arturo explained in a low whisper.
"Monica and Marcus created five separate shell companies in the Cayman Islands to hide the transfers before the audit could be initiated."
"They believed that because you were isolated in that hospital room, because your focus was entirely on Olivia, you wouldn't check the ledger."
"They forgot that our father was a federal compliance investigator who spent forty years teaching us how to read the books backward," I replied.
The double doors of the courtroom were violently thrown open, and Monica entered, her face a pale, sweating mask of raw, primitive panic.
Behind her walked her legal team, their expensive briefcases clinking against the wooden benches as they tried to maintain their aristocratic composure.
"This is an absolute farce, Your Honor!" the defense attorney shouted, pointing an aggressive finger toward our table.

"My client has acted with the highest degree of parental and corporate integrity, and these sudden financial freezes are a violation of her rights!"
"The rights of your client ended the moment she attempted to falsify medical records to terminate her daughter's life," Arturo announced.
