Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT GRAHAM FINALLY TOLD HER THE TRUTH

They escaped through an emergency stairwell.
Graham broke the door open with his shoulder, and Claire followed him into the cold Chicago night.
Neither spoke until they reached the car.
Graham locked the doors.
Then he looked at her.
“Are you okay?”
Claire nodded.
“Whoever did that knew we were here.”
“I know.”
“They knew about the files.”
“I know.”
“They wanted us scared.”
“I know.”
Claire stared at him.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I'm trying not to lie to you again.”
She looked away.
“Then don't.”
Graham started the engine.
“We need somewhere private.”
“My house is private.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Someone already knows where you live.”
Claire froze.
“How do you know?”
“Because the person who sent the message mentioned your location.”
She looked at him.
“You think my house is being watched?”
“I think we should assume it is.”
They drove to a hotel owned by a Mercer trust.
No Ashford connection.
No public reservation.
No family name.
Inside the suite, Claire finally asked the question she had avoided for years.
“Did you ever love Vanessa?”
Graham stared at her.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
Even after everything, it still hurt.
Claire looked down.
“Do you still?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I finally understood what I loved.”
She looked at him.
“You loved being wanted.”
He nodded.
“That too.”
Silence.
Graham sat across from her.
“I thought Vanessa was the person I was supposed to be with.”
“You did.”
“I believed my grandfather destroyed my future.”
“He didn't.”
“I know that now.”
Claire looked toward the window.
“Then what changed?”
“You left.”
She turned.
“When you left, I expected to feel free.”
He swallowed.
“I didn't.”
Claire said nothing.
“I felt empty.”
“That isn't my responsibility.”
“I know.”
He leaned forward.
“And I don't want it to be.”
She studied him.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“About the marriage?”
“About everything.”
Graham opened his phone.
He had saved copies of Arthur's documents.
One was a recording.
He played it.
Arthur's voice filled the room.
“You're not marrying Claire because she needs saving.”
Graham's younger voice answered.
“Then why?”
“Because she is the only person I trust.”
Claire's eyes widened.
Arthur continued.
“The Mercers are closer to the danger than they understand.”
“Who?”
“I can't tell you yet.”
“Why?”
“Because if you know, they will know.”
The recording ended.
Claire stared.
“That's it?”
“No.”
Graham played another.
This one was older.
Arthur was speaking with Charles.
“I won't allow you to use the girl.”
Charles answered.
“You've already arranged the marriage.”
“To protect her.”
“You're putting her beside Graham.”
Arthur's voice hardened.
“Graham can be controlled.”
Claire looked at Graham.
He closed his eyes.
“I was used too.”
Claire's voice was quiet.
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“I was manipulated into believing you were the reason I lost Vanessa.”
“You were responsible for your own choices.”
“I know.”
He took a breath.
“But my father wanted me angry.”
“Why?”
“Because angry people don't ask questions.”
Claire stared at him.
That sentence explained more than she wanted it to.
“Your father wanted us divided.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
The next morning, Rebecca arrived.
She had found something.
“Thomas Vale.”
Claire stood.
“You found him?”
Rebecca nodded.
“He contacted me.”
“Where is he?”
“Alive.”
Graham looked stunned.
“Where?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“He wants protection.”
“From whom?”
“He wouldn't say.”
Claire exchanged a look with Graham.
“Then let's meet him.”
They drove to a small town two hours away.
Thomas Vale was older than Claire expected.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
Tired eyes.
He looked at Graham for a long moment.
“You look like your grandfather.”
Graham frowned.
“Did you know him well?”
“I worked for him for twenty-two years.”
“What happened to Northstar?”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“That company was a front.”
“For what?”
“For moving money.”
“Whose money?”
Thomas shook his head.
“Not Ashford money.”
“Then whose?”
“International accounts.”
Claire felt a chill.
“Why would Arthur be involved?”
“He wasn't.”
Thomas leaned forward.
“Arthur discovered it.”
Graham stared.
“So my grandfather was investigating?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he die?”
Thomas looked away.
“He was warned.”
“By whom?”
Thomas finally answered.
“Your father.”
Graham went still.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My father didn't kill him.”
“I didn't say he did.”
“What did he do?”
“He told Arthur to stop.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles was already involved.”
Claire's stomach dropped.
“How deeply?”
Thomas gave a bitter smile.
“Deep enough to lose everything if Arthur exposed him.”
Graham stood.
“You're lying.”
Thomas didn't flinch.
“Then ask your father about the Meridian Account.”
Graham's face went white.
“What is that?”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“That is the account your son is connected to.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“Owen?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Arthur moved the final assets into a trust that could not be seized without exposing the entire network.”
Claire whispered—
“My son's trust.”
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandmother's trust is only the visible layer.”
“What is underneath?”
Thomas looked toward the window.
“A ledger.”
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why did you contact us?”
“Because someone found out I still have one page.”
He pulled a folded piece of paper from his coat.
Graham took it.
There were numbers.
Account codes.
And one name.
CHARLES ASHFORD.
Claire stared.
Graham looked like he had been punched.
“My father.”
Thomas nodded.
Then the door behind them opened.
Everyone turned.
Charles Ashford stood there.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
“Thomas,” he said.
Thomas backed away.
Graham stepped between his father and Claire.
“What are you doing here?”
Charles looked at him.
“I came to end this.”
Claire's voice was cold.
“No.”
Charles looked at her.
“You should have listened when Graham told you to disappear.”
Graham turned sharply.
“Don't.”
Charles ignored him.
“You have no idea what you've uncovered.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Then tell me.”
Charles stared at her.
For a long moment, nobody moved.
Then he said—
“Arthur chose you because he knew I could never control you.”
Claire's blood ran cold.
“What did you do?”
Charles smiled without warmth.
“I survived.”
Then the lights in the building went out.
A gunshot sounded somewhere outside.
Thomas screamed.
Graham grabbed Claire and pulled her to the floor.
Another shot shattered the window.

When Claire looked up again, Charles was gone.
And Thomas Vale was bleeding.
