Chapter 5 - THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE OWEN'S TRUST

Thomas survived.

But the attack changed everything.

He spent two days in a hospital under police protection.

Claire refused to leave Wisconsin.

Graham remained nearby.

Not because Claire had forgiven him.

Because someone had fired a weapon at them.

And because Owen had become part of the mystery.

That was the part Claire could not accept.

Her son had been born into a family conflict he had never chosen.

She wanted him nowhere near it.

Rebecca arrived with a stack of documents.

“I found the Meridian Account.”

Claire looked up.

“Where?”

“In the original trust documents.”

Graham sat across from them.

“What is it?”

Rebecca opened the file.

“The Meridian Account is not an account.”

“Then what?”

“A legal mechanism.”

“For what?”

“To protect assets if the Ashford family became compromised.”

Claire frowned.

“Compromised by whom?”

Rebecca looked at Graham.

“Someone inside the family.”

Graham's face tightened.

“Charles.”

“Possibly.”

“Not possibly.”

Claire looked at him.

“You're sure?”

“I know my father.”

Rebecca interrupted.

“We don't have enough evidence yet.”

She turned another page.

“The trust was designed so that if the Ashford company became involved in criminal activity, certain assets would automatically transfer to independent beneficiaries.”

Claire stared.

“Who?”

Rebecca pointed.

“You.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“And Owen.”

Silence.

“Why Owen?”

“Because he is the next generation.”

Claire shook her head.

“Arthur created this before Owen was born.”

“Correct.”

“Then how could he name Owen?”

Rebecca looked at her.

“He didn't.”

She pointed to another clause.

“The beneficiary is any direct descendant produced by the marriage between Graham Ashford and Claire Mercer.”

Claire felt sick.

“That means Arthur expected a child.”

“Yes.”

Graham stared at the document.

“My grandfather knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That our marriage would produce a child.”

Claire looked at him.

“That doesn't mean he knew when.”

Graham shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“It means he planned for it.”

Rebecca continued.

“The assets cannot be accessed until the child turns eighteen unless certain conditions are met.”

“What conditions?”

“Threat to life.”

Claire's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

“If the beneficiary or custodial parent is determined to be in immediate danger, the trustee can activate emergency protections.”

Claire looked toward the door.

“What kind of protections?”

Rebecca handed her another document.

“Private security.”

“Financial relocation.”

“Asset transfer.”

“Identity protection.”

Claire stared.

“Arthur created a system to disappear us.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Essentially.”

Claire looked at Graham.

He looked devastated.

“My grandfather knew someone might come after you.”

“Apparently.”

“I should have protected you.”

Claire's expression hardened.

“You didn't.”

“I know.”

“And I won't pretend you did.”

He nodded.

That was the difference now.

He didn't defend himself.

He accepted it.

That afternoon, Thomas Vale asked to speak with Claire privately.

She entered his hospital room alone.

Thomas looked exhausted.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“There is something I didn't tell you.”

“What?”

“Arthur didn't trust Charles.”

“I know.”

“He didn't trust Graham either.”

Claire looked down.

“That makes sense.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

He reached beneath his pillow.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“This is for you.”

Claire opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Arthur's handwriting.

She read.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then the marriage ended.

I hope you hate me.

You have every right.

I forced a decision onto you that should never have been yours to carry.

But I did it because I believed the only way to keep you alive was to put you where my enemies could see you.

I failed to understand the cost.

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

She continued.

Graham was never told the entire truth.

I believed he would eventually love you.

I was wrong to gamble your heart.

But I never believed he would abandon you.

For that, I am sorry.

Claire stopped.

Thomas looked away.

“What happened next?”

She read the final paragraph.

The danger is not the man you think it is.

It is the person standing behind him.

Claire lowered the letter.

“Who?”

Thomas whispered—

“Patricia.”

Claire froze.

“Graham's mother?”

Thomas nodded.

“She knows about the ledger.”

Claire's heart pounded.

“She works with Charles?”

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“Patricia believes Charles is weak.”

“Then who is she working for?”

Thomas looked terrified.

“Elias Vance.”

Claire's blood went cold.

“But he died.”

Thomas shook his head.

“That is what everyone was told.”

That night, Claire called Graham.

“We need to talk.”

He arrived within thirty minutes.

She told him everything.

When she finished, he sat silently.

“My mother.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“She may be involved.”

“My mother hated you.”

Claire almost laughed.

“That doesn't make her guilty.”

“I know.”

“But?”

“But I remember something.”

“What?”

“Three days before our wedding, my mother told me something strange.”

Claire waited.

“She said, ‘If Claire ever leaves, everything goes back to us.’”

Claire stared.

“What did she mean?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you ever ask?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't care.”

Claire looked away.

There it was again.

The old Graham.

The man who had believed nothing mattered unless it affected him.

He seemed to understand what she was thinking.

“I know.”

She looked back.

“What?”

“You're thinking I should have cared.”

“You should have.”

“I did eventually.”

“Too late.”

“Yes.”

A knock interrupted them.

Rebecca entered.

She looked serious.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The trustee activated the emergency clause.”

Claire stood.

“Why?”

Rebecca looked at Owen's photograph on the table.

“Because someone has attempted to transfer his assets.”

Graham went pale.

“Who?”

Rebecca placed a document down.

The signature was electronic.

But the authorization code belonged to Charles Ashford.

Claire stared.

Graham whispered—

“My father.”

Rebecca nodded.

“And there's something worse.”

“What?”

“The request was made from inside this building.”

Claire looked around.

Someone had access to them.

Someone knew exactly where they were.

Then Owen's babysitter called.

Claire answered.

“Hello?”

The woman's voice trembled.

“Mrs. Ashford?”

“What happened?”

“There was a man outside.”

Claire froze.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is Owen?”

“He's safe.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Thank God.”

“He left something.”

“What?”

“A note.”

Claire's heart began pounding.

“What does it say?”

The babysitter read it.

BRING THE LEDGER TO CHICAGO OR THE BOY WILL NEVER BE SAFE.

Claire looked at Graham.

The blood drained from his face.

May you like

They had found the one thing he could never ignore.

Their son.
