Plot twist

Chapter 7 - THE MAN HANNAH STARTED DATING

I learned Hannah was dating someone because Grace told me.

She was eighteen months old.

Her vocabulary had expanded dramatically, though accuracy remained questionable.

"Mommy Ben."

I looked up from cutting strawberries.

"What?"

"Ben."

"Who's Ben?"

Grace smiled.

"Ben dog."

That clarified nothing.

At the next exchange, I asked Hannah casually.

Too casually.

"Who's Ben?"

Her expression told me immediately.

"Oh."

"Oh?"

"Grace mentioned him?"

"Apparently he has a dog."

Hannah laughed.

"He does."

I waited.

She didn't explain.

Old Trevor would have pushed.

Demanded.

Acted like divorce somehow preserved ownership.

I didn't.

"Okay."

Hannah studied me.

"He's someone I'm seeing."

There it was.

My stomach tightened.

"Serious?"

"Trevor."

"Sorry. None of my business."

"Correct."

"Has he been around Grace?"

Her expression changed.

That was my business.

"A few times. In group settings. I've been careful."

"Okay."

"If it becomes serious enough that he'll be around her regularly, I'll tell you."

"Thank you."

Hannah looked almost suspicious.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You expected me to lose my mind."

"Maybe."

"I lost the right."

"Dating isn't about rights."

"Still."

I buckled Grace into my car.

Then Hannah said:

"His name is Benjamin Ross. He's a physical therapist. Divorced. No children. No criminal record."

I stared.

"You background-checked him?"

"Of course."

I laughed.

She smiled.

"Lauren helped."

"That makes me less comfortable."

We both laughed.

That surprised us.

Driving away, jealousy arrived.

Hard.

Ugly.

I pictured another man sitting in Hannah's kitchen.

Holding Grace.

Making Hannah laugh.

I hated him.

I didn't even know him.

That night, I almost searched his social media.

Then stopped.

Dr. Reed asked about it in therapy.

"What exactly are you afraid of?"

"Being replaced."

"As husband?"

"I'm already replaced as husband."

"Are you?"

"I mean eventually."

"That's not what I asked."

I thought.

The role didn't exist anymore.

Nobody could replace me in a marriage that had ended.

"What about as Grace's father?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Can a healthy additional adult relationship erase you?"

"No."

"Then what determines your relationship with Grace?"

"Me."

"Your consistency."

"Yes."

"Then focus there."

Annoyingly reasonable.

Months later, I met Ben.

Grace's second birthday.

Hannah invited me to the party.

That itself represented progress.

Two years earlier, she had disappeared without telling me where she lived.

Now I stood in her backyard helping inflate balloons.

Ben arrived carrying a stuffed dog.

He was tall.

Friendly.

I immediately disliked how likable he was.

"Trevor?"

"Ben?"

We shook hands.

"Good to meet you."

"Likewise."

Grace ran toward him.

"BEN DOG!"

Apparently he had become permanently associated with dogs.

He crouched.

"Hey, Gracie."

I watched.

He didn't pick her up.

He waited for her to hug him.

Good.

I hated that I noticed.

Later, Ben and I ended up beside the cooler.

Awkward.

He broke the silence.

"I know this is probably weird."

"Very."

"Yeah."

"You treat her well?"

"Hannah?"

"Both."

His expression became serious.

"Yes."

I nodded.

"Then we're good."

He didn't mention my affair.

Didn't posture.

Didn't tell me he was a better man.

He didn't need to.

At one point, I watched Hannah laugh at something he said.

Jealousy came again.

Then Grace grabbed my hand.

"Daddy cake!"

And just like that, the feeling became manageable.

Daddy.

That was my place.

Nobody else had it.

Later, after everyone left, Hannah texted:

Thank you for being normal today.

I replied:

The bar remains inspiringly low.

She sent a laughing emoji.

Progress.

Then life complicated things.

Six months later, Ben proposed to Hannah.

She told me before telling Grace.

I appreciated that.

"Congratulations."

She searched my face.

"You mean that?"

"Working on it."

She laughed.

"Fair."

"Is he moving in?"

"After the wedding."

"Okay."

"We need to update some logistics."

We did.

School pickup eventually.

Emergency contacts.

Medical permissions where appropriate.

We approached it like adults.

Not rivals.

Then something happened I didn't expect.

I started dating too.

Her name was Rachel Kim.

We met at work.

Not in my reporting line.

I checked.

Twice.

She was a project analyst for a client team, and after the project ended, she asked if I wanted coffee.

My first instinct was fear.

Relationships had become associated with destruction.

Rachel was patient.

On our third date, I told her everything.

Not a sanitized version.

The affair.

The money.

The termination.

The divorce.

Vanessa.

Grace.

Rachel listened.

Then:

"Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because if we keep dating, I don't want you learning it from someone else."

"Good answer."

"Are you leaving?"

She considered.

"Not tonight."

Romance.

American style.

We dated slowly.

I introduced her to Grace after eight months and after discussing it with Hannah.

Rachel didn't try to become Grace's mother.

Ben didn't try to become her father.

That boundary became the unexpected foundation of our strange family.

Then, when Grace was three, she drew a picture at preschool.

Four adults.

One little girl.

A dog.

Her teacher wrote labels based on Grace's explanation.

MOMMY.

DADDY.

BEN.

RACHEL.

DOG.

I stared at it.

Once, I thought family meant protecting my position at the center.

Now I understood family could expand without erasing anyone.

But just as my life began feeling stable, I received a letter.

Vanessa.

I hadn't heard from her in almost two years.

She wrote that she was getting married.

I almost stopped reading.

Then came the real reason.

She had found something while preparing to move.

An old flash drive.

It contained photographs from the first months of our affair.

And one audio recording.

She believed I needed to hear it.

I didn't want to.

I gave it to Michael.

He listened first.

Then called me.

"Trevor."

"What?"

"You need to hear this."

"Why?"

"Because Hannah may need to hear it too."

My stomach tightened.

"What is it?"

Michael paused.

"A recording of Vanessa talking to someone about you."

"Who?"

"Your former boss."

Eric Dalton.

I froze.

"Why would Vanessa be talking to Eric?"

May you like

Michael's answer changed everything I thought I understood about how the affair had begun.

"Because, Trevor, it sounds like Vanessa was involved with him before she was involved with you."
