Plot twist

Chapter 10 - HANNAH FINALLY TOLD ME WHY SHE LEFT WITHOUT WARNING

It happened at Grace's eighth birthday.

The party had ended.

Ben took Grace and Ethan outside because Grace insisted on showing her little brother how to use a scooter despite the fact that he was barely walking.

Rachel was helping clean up.

Hannah and I ended up alone in the kitchen.

She looked around.

"Eight."

"I know."

"Feels impossible."

"She was three months old when—"

We both stopped.

The empty house existed between us.

Hannah sat.

"I've never told you something."

"What?"

"The night before I left, I almost stayed."

I stared.

"What?"

"I had everything packed."

She looked down.

"Lauren had rented the truck. My attorney had filed the paperwork. I knew you'd be gone all day."

"With Vanessa."

"Yes."

She no longer flinched at the name.

"I sat in the nursery holding Grace at four in the morning."

Her eyes filled.

"And I thought maybe I was overreacting."

"You weren't."

"I know that now."

"Hannah—"

"I was terrified."

That surprised me.

In my memory, Hannah had executed a flawless escape.

Strong.

Cold.

Certain.

"I had no idea whether I could afford everything alone."

"You had money."

"Not emotionally, Trevor."

I stayed quiet.

"I had a newborn. I hadn't slept. My body didn't feel like mine. My husband was sleeping with another woman. My sister was furious. My mother wanted me to come home. Lawyers were talking about custody."

She shook her head.

"I wanted my old life back."

I swallowed.

"So why did you leave?"

"You came home at three in the morning."

My heart stopped.

"The night before?"

"Yes."

I remembered.

Vanessa and I had gone to a hotel.

"You walked into the nursery."

I didn't remember that.

"You thought I was asleep."

"What did I do?"

"You looked at Grace."

Hannah's voice cracked.

"For maybe ten seconds."

I waited.

"Then your phone buzzed."

I closed my eyes.

"You smiled."

I felt sick.

"You smiled at her message while standing beside our daughter's crib."

Hannah wiped a tear.

"Then you left the room."

Silence.

"That's when I knew."

"Knew what?"

"That if I stayed, I'd teach Grace this was what love looked like."

I couldn't breathe.

"I could survive you cheating on me."

She looked toward the window where Grace was laughing.

"But I couldn't raise her to think a woman was supposed to disappear inside someone else's selfishness."

I nodded slowly.

"You did the right thing."

"I know."

No cruelty.

Just certainty.

And strangely, I was glad she knew.

"I hated you for taking her."

"I know."

"But you protected her."

"Yes."

"And yourself."

"Eventually."

I looked at Hannah.

"Thank you."

She frowned.

"For leaving me."

That startled a laugh out of her.

"You're welcome?"

"I'm serious."

"I know."

"If you hadn't—"

"Trevor."

She stopped me.

"Don't turn me leaving into the thing that fixed you."

I went quiet.

"You fixed you."

She continued.

"I set a boundary. That's all."

That distinction mattered.

"I couldn't make you become a better father."

"No."

"You did that."

I nodded.

"Okay."

"And don't make your affair the best thing that happened to you."

I laughed softly.

"Therapist say that?"

"My therapist."

"Yours is smarter than mine."

"Obviously."

We smiled.

Then Hannah said:

"I forgave you years ago."

I looked up.

"What?"

"I thought you knew."

"No."

"I don't excuse it."

"I know."

"I wouldn't change the divorce."

"I know."

"But I forgave you."

My eyes burned.

"Why?"

"For me."

Of course.

Not because I earned it.

Not because I needed it.

Because she didn't want to carry hatred forever.

"Thank you."

She nodded.

Then:

"And Trevor?"

"Yeah?"

"You became the father Grace deserved."

That broke me.

I covered my face.

Hannah laughed.

"Still crying all the time?"

"Apparently."

Rachel walked in.

She saw me.

Then Hannah.

"Should I be worried?"

Hannah said:

"He's emotional."

Rachel nodded.

"Chronic."

I laughed.

No jealousy.

No hidden tension.

Just three adults standing in a kitchen while our children screamed outside.

That night, I told Rachel everything Hannah had said.

Rachel listened.

Then kissed my cheek.

"I'm glad."

"That she forgave me?"

"That you forgave yourself enough to hear it."

May you like

I hadn't realized I had.

But maybe she was right.
