Chapter 3 - THE MORNING OF THE UNRAVELING

The morning of the wedding arrived with a pale, cold Chicago sun that did nothing to warm the frosted glass of the bridal suite windows.
At 8:00 AM, the room was a chaotic, buzzing hive of activity, with makeup artists, hair stylists, and bridesmaids rushing around in matching silk robes.
Sienna stood near the door, her sharp eyes scanning the corridor while she held a garment bag containing her maid-of-honor dress.
The door flew open, and Julian stepped into the suite, looking immaculate in his custom navy tuxedo, his hair styled to perfection.
He carried his signature, tender smile on his face, his eyes warm and seemingly filled with an absolute, pure devotion.
"Hey, beautiful," Julian said, walking over to press a soft kiss against my forehead, his hand resting gently against my waist.
"My mother told me you left your favorite cardigan at her place last night."
"She was so worried you would be cold today, so she sent it ahead with the coordinator."
He reached behind his back and pulled out the cream cardigan, those two tiny embroidered flowers near the collar looking so innocent against his dark suit.
"Thank you, Julian," I said, my voice carrying a soft, compliant sweetness that had been polished through three days of calculated focus.
I took the cardigan from his hands, my fingers brushing against the fabric my dying mother had stitched with her own hands.
One flower for peace.
One for protection.
"Are you ready for today, Harper?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into that low, emotional frequency I had trusted for five long years.
"Our future starts today."
"And speaking of the future, my mother’s lawyer, Dr. Sterling, left a few standard administrative forms in the coordinator’s office."
"Just some basic, pre-ceremony asset declarations to ensure our Lincoln Park condo is protected under the corporate insurance policy."
"He said we should sign them before the photographers arrive, just to get the legal paperwork out of the way."
I looked down at the documents he pulled from his leather folder, my eyes immediately catching the hidden, predatory clause disguised as a standard insurance waiver.
It was a joint tenancy agreement with a direct, irrevocable power of attorney clause, granting Julian exclusive management over my estate in the event of my physical or mental incapacitation.
They had prepared everything.
"Of course, Julian," I smiled, taking the gold-plated pen from his hand with a calmness that sent a quiet shiver of satisfaction through his chest.
"I’ll sign them right after the makeup artist finishes my lashes."
"I want to make sure everything is perfect."
Julian smiled, his confidence flickering with a sudden, triumphant relief as he turned and walked out of the room to join his groomsmen.

He believed he had successfully locked the door.
He had absolutely no idea that I had already changed the key.
