Chapter 5 - THE CORPORATE TRAP DOOR

Eleanor Mercer stood up from her chair in the front row, her face turning an instant, pasty shade of gray under the glittering chandeliers.

"Turn that off!" Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure entirely disappearing into a mask of raw, primitive panic.

"This is an absolute fabrication! My daughter-in-law is experiencing a severe, highly unstable emotional breakdown!"

"It isn't a breakdown, Eleanor; it's an audit," my brother, Captain Marcus of the Financial Crimes Division, announced as he stepped through the ballroom doors.

He was flanked by four armed federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their gold shields gleaming under the crystal lights.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" Marcus commanded, his voice carrying the absolute, military authority of a federal raid.

"Julian Mercer, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the systematic theft of investor capital."

Julian tried to lunge toward the private service exit behind the altar, his face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl of panic.

But two heavily built marshals tackled him to the floorboards, pinning his navy-clad frame against the ivory aisle runner and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking as his custom tuxedo was stained with the dirt of the floor.

"We have the legal right to these assets!"

"The only place you have a right to is a federal penitentiary, Julian," Marcus Bennett said, stepping onto the platform and displaying the secure digital drive.

"We have the physical records proving you siphoned four million dollars from your company's retirement fund to cover your mother's real estate losses."

"And we have the signed confessions of Dr. Robert Sterling, who has already surrendered his files to the federal prosecutor in exchange for a lesser sentence."

Victoria, who had been sitting near the back table, let out a sharp, high-pitched shriek of pure high-society terror as she realized her family's dynasty was permanently ruined.

The golden prince of the Gold Coast was led out of his own wedding in chains, his life of luxury traded for a concrete cell.
