Margaret’s smooth, practiced expression cracked instantly, her hand flying up to clutch her expensive pearl earrings.
"Colonel Hart, this is highly improper," she stammered, her voice rising in pitch. "You have no jurisdiction over a private family matter."
"This ceased to be a private family matter the moment your son crossed the state boundary line, Margaret," I said, not taking my eyes off Ethan.

"Under article one hundred and thirty-four of the military justice code, any contractor engaging in domestic abuse, coercion, or unlawful restraint against a dependent is subject to immediate federal arrest."
Brandon stepped forward, his cold, cynical face tightening as he tried to block the officers from reaching his younger brother.
"Our family owns Prescott Infrastructure, Colonel," Brandon sneered, attempting to regain his confidence. "We have the state senators on speed dial."
"Then you should call them now, Brandon," I said, a cold, empty smile spreading across my lips.
"Because the secondary compliance audit on your firm’s federal bidding papers just went live five minutes ago."

Ethan looked at his mother, his face turning an ugly shade of ash as his phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket.
The screen lit up with an unread notification from their corporate headquarters downtown: All federal logistics accounts frozen by order of the Department of Defense.
