Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE ORIGINAL BETRAYAL

We spent the next forty-eight hours reconstructing my mother's investigation.

Ethan shut down the Bellweather acquisition completely.

The board authorized an emergency forensic audit.

Federal investigators became involved.

And Lily's hospital security was increased.

But the most important discovery came from my mother's old files.

She had kept copies of everything.

Not at home.

Not in a bank.

At a public library.

She had rented a private archive box twenty-two years earlier.

The library still had it.

Inside were hundreds of pages.

Audits.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Photographs.

And one document that changed everything.

An old corporate agreement between Arden Crest and a private investment group.

Thomas Wexler had been a minority partner.

But the agreement contained a clause allowing him to purchase additional voting shares if Arden Crest suffered a major financial crisis.

I stared at it.

“He created the crisis.”

Ethan nodded.

“Then he could buy the company cheaply.”

My mother had discovered the plan.

She had exposed the first part.

But before she could expose everything, the investigation disappeared.

She resigned.

Wexler survived.

And the scheme continued quietly for decades.

Until now.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why didn't your father know?”

“My father was CEO then.”

I froze.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know?”

Ethan looked down.

“I don't know.”

That was the problem.

Too many secrets.

Too many people protecting themselves.

Too many years between the crime and the truth.

Then we found the bank records.

Wexler had created dozens of shell companies.

He used them to buy shares in Arden Crest through intermediaries.

Then he used Bellweather to inflate property values.

The goal was simple.

Create enough financial confusion to trigger a shareholder panic.

Drive Arden Crest's stock down.

Buy controlling shares.

Take over the company.

And then strip it of valuable assets.

The eighty-four-million-dollar Bellweather acquisition was simply the final step.

Maya was the person who had accidentally found the crack in the entire plan.

And Vanessa had been helping him.

But there was one question.

“Why recruit me?”

Ethan looked at the records.

“Because your mother was the only person who nearly stopped him.”

I felt cold.

“They wanted me here because they thought I could be controlled.”

“Probably.”

“But Vanessa recommended me.”

“Yes.”

“Then she wanted me to find the numbers?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Maybe.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

He opened another file.

A performance review from four years earlier.

My mother was mentioned.

Not by name.

By reference.

“Your hiring file was flagged.”

“By whom?”

“Thomas Wexler.”

I stared.

“He knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“Then why let me into Arden Crest?”

Ethan answered quietly.

“Because he thought you'd eventually find what your mother found.”

My stomach tightened.

“And then?”

“He intended to make you look responsible.”

The room went silent.

I understood.

If I discovered the fraud, I could become the scapegoat.

An ambitious analyst.

A family connection to the original investigator.

A person who had unauthorized access to financial records.

Perfect.

I would expose the fraud.

Then they would accuse me of creating it.

My career would collapse.

And Wexler would remain clean.

I looked at Ethan.

“Vanessa knew.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel knew.”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

“We don't know.”

A knock sounded.

Mark entered.

“Ethan, we found Daniel.”

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Did he leave?”

“No.”

“He was arrested?”

Mark nodded.

“Federal agents intercepted him.”

I exhaled.

“What did he say?”

Mark hesitated.

“He asked to speak to Maya.”

I looked at Ethan.

We went downstairs.

Daniel Cross sat in a secure interview room.

He looked exhausted.

When he saw me, he lowered his eyes.

“Maya.”

“What did you do?”

“I accessed Lily's file.”

“Why?”

“To scare you.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who ordered you?”

“Vanessa.”

I expected that.

But he continued.

“Vanessa was ordered by Wexler.”

That confirmed it.

“Why?”

“Because you were close.”

“To what?”

“The truth.”

I sat across from him.

“What happened to my mother?”

He looked at me.

“She was threatened.”

“By Wexler?”

“Yes.”

“Did he kill her?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She resigned because she was afraid.”

“What about the investigation?”

“Wexler buried it.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She came later.”

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She was in love with Ethan.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“She believed Ethan's father had stolen her family's money.”

That didn't make sense.

Daniel continued.

“Her father had invested in one of Wexler's companies.”

“He lost everything.”

“Wexler blamed Arden Crest.”

“So Vanessa hated Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“But she worked for him.”

“She wanted access.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did she ever love him?”

Daniel looked away.

“Maybe.”

That complicated everything.

Vanessa wasn't simply greedy.

She had been manipulated too.

But that didn't excuse what she had done.

“Where is she now?”

Daniel gave me an address.

“Wexler's private estate.”

Ethan stood.

“Why would she go there?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Wexler knows the investigation is closing in.”

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

“He plans to leave tonight.”

Ethan immediately called federal agents.

But before they could move, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice.

Thomas Wexler.

“Maya.”

My heart stopped.

“You sound just like your mother.”

“What do you want?”

“Your sister.”

I stood.

“Leave Lily alone.”

“You misunderstand.”

He sounded calm.

“I don't want to hurt her.”

“Then what?”

“I want what your mother took from me.”

“I don't have it.”

“Yes, you do.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The original ledger.”

I looked at Ethan.

He was listening.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“You found it in the library.”

My blood went cold.

“You've been watching us.”

“Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because you are the final obstacle.”

I clenched my fist.

“You're going to prison.”

He laughed softly.

“Maybe.”

Then his voice changed.

“But first, I'm going to make sure you lose everything.”

The call ended.

Seconds later, my phone received a photograph.

Lily.

Sitting outside the hospital.

May you like

Someone was standing behind her.

I ran.
