Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING COLLAPSED

I reached the hospital in less than twenty minutes.

Security had already been alerted.

Lily was inside.

Safe.

But the photograph had been real.

Someone had been watching her.

Ethan arrived behind me.

“She's being moved.”

“Where?”

“A private facility.”

I nodded.

Then my phone rang again.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“Not where you think.”

“Are you with Wexler?”

Silence.

Then she said,

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I made a mistake.”

I stared at Ethan.

“What kind?”

“I believed him.”

Her voice cracked.

“I believed he was going to destroy Arden Crest and punish the people who hurt my family.”

“What did he promise you?”

“Control.”

I waited.

“He promised me a seat on the board.”

“And Ethan?”

She was silent.

“What about him?”

“I never stopped loving him.”

That surprised me.

“But you tried to destroy his company.”

“I thought he knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That his father had destroyed my family.”

Ethan stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

Vanessa heard him.

“Ethan?”

He spoke quietly.

“I didn't know.”

She began crying.

“I know.”

“Where is Wexler?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

She hesitated.

“He's going to the old Bellweather warehouse.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Why?”

“The original documents are there.”

I asked,

“Which documents?”

“The ones your mother couldn't find.”

Then the call ended.

Federal agents moved immediately.

We drove to the warehouse.

The building stood at the edge of an industrial district.

Rain had started again.

The same kind of heavy rain that made everything look blurred.

Agents surrounded the property.

Ethan stayed with me.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“I know.”

“But you're coming anyway.”

“Yes.”

He smiled faintly.

“Stubborn.”

“My mother called it persistence.”

We entered through the side door.

The warehouse was dark.

Then we heard voices.

Wexler.

Vanessa.

They were arguing.

“You promised me,” Vanessa said.

“You've become inconvenient.”

“You said you'd protect me.”

“I said whatever I needed to say.”

I looked at Ethan.

He nodded.

We moved closer.

Wexler appeared holding a briefcase.

Vanessa stood across from him.

“You're leaving,” she said.

“Tonight.”

“You said we'd control Arden Crest.”

“You were useful.”

Her face changed.

“That's all I was?”

“Yes.”

She stepped backward.

Wexler turned.

He saw us.

“Maya.”

Federal agents shouted.

“Don't move!”

Wexler froze.

Then he smiled.

“You brought your CEO.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

Wexler laughed.

“No, Ethan.”

He looked at him.

“It began with your father.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“What did you do to him?”

“I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Protect Arden Crest or expose the truth.”

Ethan's face changed.

“What truth?”

Wexler smiled.

“Your father knew about the pension fraud.”

Silence.

Ethan looked stunned.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“And he allowed it?”

“He was afraid.”

I watched Ethan absorb the revelation.

Wexler continued.

“Your father chose the company.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

The federal agents moved closer.

Wexler suddenly threw the briefcase.

It hit the floor.

Papers scattered.

Vanessa lunged toward them.

An agent stopped her.

“Don't!”

She froze.

Wexler tried to run.

He made it three steps before security tackled him.

The warehouse erupted in shouting.

Within minutes, he was handcuffed.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Then she looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I believed she meant it.

But apology didn't erase what she had done.

“You threatened my sister.”

“I know.”

“You tried to destroy my career.”

“I know.”

“You helped Wexler.”

She lowered her head.

“I know.”

I walked away.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

Ethan stood beside me.

“He's finished.”

I looked at him.

“Is he?”

“The evidence is overwhelming.”

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

The hospital.

I answered.

“Hello?”

“Maya Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“This is Dr. Patel.”

My heart stopped.

“Lily?”

“She is stable.”

I exhaled.

“What happened?”

“The stress caused her heart rate to spike.”

I closed my eyes.

“But she's okay?”

“Yes.”

I sat on the hood of the car.

For the first time all night, I cried.

Ethan stood beside me.

He didn't say anything.

He simply stayed.

Sometimes that mattered more.

Weeks later, the Bellweather case exploded across the news.

Wexler was charged with fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, attempted corporate takeover and multiple financial crimes.

Daniel cooperated.

Vanessa entered a plea agreement.

She accepted responsibility for her role and provided investigators with additional records.

The forensic audit revealed that more than three hundred million dollars had been moved through the network.

Arden Crest survived.

The board removed several executives.

And then Ethan called me into his office.

“I want you to become chief financial integrity officer.”

I stared at him.

“That sounds like a made-up title.”

“It is.”

I laughed.

“Why me?”

“Because you ask questions.”

“That gets me into trouble.”

“It also saves companies.”

I smiled.

“I'll think about it.”

He nodded.

Then his expression changed.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

He placed a folder on the desk.

“Lily's hospital bill.”

I frowned.

“What about it?”

“It has been paid.”

I stared.

“By whom?”

He smiled.

“Arden Crest Foundation.”

I shook my head.

“I can't accept that.”

“You aren't.”

“What?”

“It isn't charity.”

He opened another document.

“The board created a medical assistance fund for employees and their families.”

I stared at him.

“And Lily is the first person to receive it.”

I felt tears in my eyes.

“You did this?”

“We did.”

I shook my head.

“Ethan…”

He smiled.

“Your sister needs surgery.”

I finally nodded.

“Thank you.”

He stood.

“You don't have to thank me.”

“I do.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Just make sure she gets better.”

May you like

I promised.

And for the first time in months, I believed she would.
