Chapter 2 - THE SILENT RECORD

The wail of the sirens grew louder, slicing through the warm afternoon air of our quiet suburban street like a physical blade.

I lay on the damp grass, my hand pressed against my bleeding temple, watching my daughter Claire and her husband Derek try to maintain their composed, high-society expressions.

"She’s completely unstable, Officer," Derek declared immediately as the first police cruiser pulled up to the curb, his voice raised in an artificial tone of deep, husbandly concern.

"She attacked Claire inside the kitchen, and when we tried to calm her down, she tripped over her own feet and fell off the porch steps."

The young officer looked at me, his hand resting on his utility belt, his eyes taking in my torn clothes, the dirt on my hands, and the blood trickling down my cheek.

"Is this true, ma'am?" the officer asked, stepping closer to where I sat on the grass.

"She has a history of alcohol abuse, Officer, and we have the medical paperwork to prove she isn't fit to manage her own estate," Claire lied smoothly, her arms crossed as she projected an image of absolute, grief-stricken daughterly compliance.

"That's a lie," a calm, clear voice cut through the growing crowd of neighbors.

Mrs. Alvarez stepped past the yellow caution tape, her hand holding her smartphone high, the screen displaying a live, high-definition recording interface.

"I have been streaming to a secure cloud server since the moment I heard the first scream inside that kitchen, Officer," she said, her voice steady and entirely devoid of fear.

"I recorded Derek smashing this woman's head against the tile floor, and I recorded Claire dragging her mother by her hair out onto the porch."

Claire’s face turned an instant, pasty shade of wet ash as the officer's gaze shifted from her to the glowing screen of Mrs. Alvarez’s phone.
