Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE DAY EVERYTHING CHANGED

I don't remember the drive to the hospital.

I remember Julian beside me.

I remember his hand gripping mine.

I remember every red light feeling like an insult.

But mostly, I remember the nurse's voice.

“She had a fall.”

Those four words nearly broke me.

By the time we reached the pediatric emergency department, Emma was sitting on a bed with a small bandage above her eyebrow.

She looked annoyed.

Not frightened.

Annoyed.

“Mommy.”

I rushed to her.

“What happened?”

She pointed at the nurse.

“She wouldn't let me get up.”

The nurse smiled.

“She was climbing on a chair.”

Emma looked offended.

“I wasn't climbing.”

“You were standing on it.”

“I was reaching.”

Julian covered his face.

I nearly cried from relief.

The doctor examined her.

Minor injury.

No serious damage.

But the doctor asked a question that changed everything.

“Who brought her here?”

I answered.

“My mother.”

The doctor nodded.

“She said someone had been asking about Emma at the hotel last night.”

I froze.

“Who?”

“She couldn't identify him.”

Julian's expression hardened.

“What did he look like?”

The doctor shook his head.

“She wasn't sure.”

My mother arrived ten minutes later.

She looked terrified.

“I saw him.”

“Who?”

“A man.”

“Where?”

“In the hotel lobby.”

“What did he do?”

“He was watching Emma.”

My blood ran cold.

“Did he approach her?”

“No.”

“Did he speak to her?”

“No.”

“Then why are you sure?”

“Because when I moved Emma behind me, he left.”

Julian looked at me.

“This is no longer just financial.”

I nodded.

We left the hospital with Emma that afternoon.

From that moment forward, we increased security.

Not because we wanted to live in fear.

Because we had learned what happened when we underestimated people.

That evening, Marcus called.

“I heard about Emma.”

My voice became cold.

“How?”

“I have people.”

“That isn't comforting.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“I want to help.”

I almost laughed.

“Why?”

“Because this is my fault.”

“No.”

“Some of it is.”

I sat down.

“Marcus, you didn't create Daniel.”

“But I ignored things.”

“Yes.”

He was silent.

Then he said,

“I found something.”

“What?”

“An old laptop.”

“Where?”

“My father's office.”

“What's on it?”

“Records.”

“Financial?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“Messages between Daniel and David.”

I stood.

“Do they mention me?”

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

“What do they say?”

Marcus breathed slowly.

“They mention your divorce.”

I closed my eyes.

“What exactly?”

“They say if the divorce went badly enough, you would be discredited.”

I felt the room tilt.

Julian caught my arm.

Marcus continued.

“They wanted you to look like a dishonest spouse.”

“Why?”

“Because your professional reputation made you dangerous.”

That sentence stayed with me.

They hadn't wanted my money.

They wanted my credibility.

If I ever discovered what they were doing, nobody would believe me.

I whispered,

“Why?”

Marcus answered.

“Because you were the one person who could understand the financial structure.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

My career.

My divorce.

The fake bank account.

The fraudulent transfers.

The acquisition.

The five years of silence.

It had all been designed around one assumption.

That I would remain broken after Marcus left me.

That I would disappear.

That I would never look back.

They had underestimated me.

The same way Marcus once had.

That night, investigators searched David's office.

They found files.

Encrypted drives.

False company records.

And photographs.

One photograph made me stop breathing.

It showed Marcus and Chloe together.

But it wasn't recent.

It was taken before Marcus and I divorced.

The date was visible.

Four months before I discovered the affair.

I stared at it.

Marcus stood beside me.

His face collapsed.

“I didn't know this existed.”

I looked at Chloe.

She had been brought in for questioning.

She stared at the photograph.

Then she started crying.

“I can explain.”

Marcus turned.

“Explain what?”

“I didn't know what they were doing.”

“Who took the picture?”

“Daniel.”

“Why?”

She whispered,

“To prove I was close to you.”

Marcus stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“He said he needed someone inside the marriage.”

Silence.

I looked at Chloe.

“You didn't just have an affair with him.”

“No.”

“You were placed there.”

She nodded.

“By Daniel.”

Marcus looked like he'd been punched.

“And you married me because of him?”

Chloe cried.

“At first.”

That single sentence destroyed whatever remained between them.

Marcus turned away.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Then Chloe said something that changed everything again.

“Daniel wasn't the one in charge.”

Everyone stopped.

I looked at her.

“Who was?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered a name.

“David Lang.”

Julian looked at me.

Marcus went pale.

The man who had represented him.

The man who had handled my divorce.

The man who had access to our financial records.

The man who had been connected to Daniel for twenty years.

May you like

He had been inside our lives the entire time.

And now we finally knew who had been pulling the strings.
