Chapter 7 - THE HEARING

The court hearing took place three weeks later.
By then, the investigation had grown far beyond the original financial dispute.
David Lang had been charged with multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy.
Daniel Vance had disappeared for eleven days before authorities located him.
Several executives at Mercer Strategic had resigned.
And Marcus had voluntarily turned over every financial record he possessed.
For once, he wasn't trying to control the story.
He was trying to survive it.
Chloe had agreed to cooperate.
Her testimony was expected to be critical.
But the most important hearing wasn't about money.
It was about me.
David's attorneys had attempted to argue that my involvement in the acquisition created a conflict of interest.
They wanted to portray me as someone using my marriage to Julian to destroy Marcus.
It was absurd.
But dangerous.
Because lies do not need to be true to be expensive.
I sat beside Julian in the courtroom.
Marcus sat several rows away.
For the first time in years, we were on the same side of something.
The judge reviewed the documents.
Then asked,
“Ms. Mercer, why did you become involved in this investigation?”
I answered honestly.
“Because someone used my identity.”
“And why did you continue?”
“Because the same people had been manipulating my former husband's company.”
The judge looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Mercer, do you believe your former wife is responsible for any of this?”
Marcus stood.
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
“She isn't.”
That moment mattered more than I expected.
Five years earlier, Marcus had told everyone that I was the problem.
Now he was standing in court saying the opposite.
The judge asked,
“Why?”
Marcus looked at me.
“Because I finally looked at the evidence.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Chloe testified.
Her voice shook.
She admitted that Daniel had introduced her to David before she married Marcus.
She admitted that they discussed Marcus's financial position.
She admitted that she had been encouraged to become close to him.
But she insisted she had not understood the full plan.
The prosecutor asked,
“What was the objective?”
Chloe looked down.
“To make Evelyn look dishonest.”
“Why?”
“Because she was a compliance attorney.”
“And what would happen if she were discredited?”
Chloe whispered,
“Nobody would trust what she discovered.”
That was the entire plan.
Not simply stealing money.
Controlling the person most likely to expose the theft.
The courtroom remained silent.
Then the prosecutor presented the financial records.
The forged account.
The fake companies.
The transfers.
The stolen credentials.
The payments to David.
And finally, the evidence showing that Marcus's company had been manipulated from within.
When it was over, the judge dismissed the conflict-of-interest claim.
But there was still one issue.
The acquisition.
Julian's company could not simply take control of Mercer Strategic while the investigation was ongoing.
So Julian did something unexpected.
He withdrew the acquisition offer.
Marcus looked stunned.
After court, he approached Julian.
“You don't have to do that.”
“Yes.”
“You could buy the company.”
“I could.”
“Then why walk away?”
Julian looked at him.
“Because I don't want to profit from your crisis.”
Marcus lowered his head.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Marcus said,
“Thank you.”
Julian nodded.
“I'll still help stabilize the company if you want.”
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Julian.
“I do.”
That night, we went home.
Emma ran toward us.
“Mommy!”
I dropped to my knees.
She hugged me.
“Did you win?”
I laughed.
“Something like that.”
She looked at Julian.
“Did Dad win too?”
Julian smiled.
“I think everybody learned something.”
Emma considered that.
“That's boring.”
I laughed.
She grabbed my hand.
“Come on.”
“Where?”
“I made you something.”
She dragged me into the kitchen.
On the refrigerator was a drawing.
Four people.
Me.
Julian.
Emma.
And a fourth figure with a large smile.
I looked closer.
“Who's that?”
Emma pointed.
“Daddy Marcus.”
I stared at the drawing.
My heart tightened.
After everything, my daughter still saw Marcus as her father.
And perhaps that was the most important lesson of all.
Children did not understand revenge.
They understood love.
Marcus had made terrible choices.
But Emma had not asked me to hate him.
She had only asked me to let her love everyone safely.
Later that night, I received a message.
From Marcus.
Thank you for not turning Emma against me.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then replied:
She's your daughter.
His response came almost immediately.
I know.
I wish I'd understood what that meant sooner.
I put my phone down.
Then I heard something outside.
A car.
I looked through the window.
A dark sedan was parked across the street.
Its engine was running.
Someone was sitting inside.
I called Julian.
He came downstairs.
The car moved.
Slowly.
Then disappeared around the corner.
My heart started racing.
Julian looked at me.
“We need to know who that was.”
Because even though the court had exposed the conspiracy, I suddenly realized something terrifying.
David Lang had been arrested.
Daniel had been arrested.
May you like
But someone else had financed them.
And that person had never been named.
