Chapter 12 - PRESTON FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH WITHOUT ASKING FOR ANYTHING

Hope came home after forty-one days.

The penthouse was no longer mine.

I had moved into my grandmother's old townhouse while the divorce proceeded.

Preston came for supervised parenting time under a temporary agreement we negotiated rather than fought over.

He arrived early.

Washed his hands.

Changed his shirt because Hope was medically fragile.

Asked before picking her up.

That last part mattered.

“May I?”

I nodded.

He held our daughter.

Hope stared at him.

Then sneezed.

Preston laughed.

For ten minutes, he was simply a father.

Afterward, while Hope slept, he said:

“I need to tell you something.”

I waited.

“I loved what you gave me more than I loved you properly.”

My chest tightened.

He continued.

“You made my life look stable.”

“Preston—”

“Let me finish.”

I did.

“You remembered birthdays. You knew which clients' wives had surgery. You made my father tolerate me. You made dinners feel like a home instead of a meeting.”

He swallowed.

“And I treated those things like services I was entitled to.”

I said nothing.

“With Sloane, I felt admired.”

“You were admired at home.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You knew me too well.”

That was painfully honest.

“She admired the version of me I wanted to be.”

“And I saw the version you were.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Hope.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

A sad smile.

“I don't expect another chance.”

“Good.”

“I’m going to cooperate with the company investigation.”

I studied him.

“Why?”

“Because I did things that were wrong even if they weren't all illegal.”

That was the first time Preston accepted accountability without attaching a request.

No:

Come home.

No:

Release the financing.

No:

Protect my reputation.

Just truth.

It didn't save our marriage.

But perhaps it saved something of the man our daughter would someday know.
