Plot twist

Chapter 8 - PRESTON TRIED TO TURN THE PRESS AGAINST ME

The headline appeared Thursday morning.

SECRET HEIRESS FREEZES HUSBAND'S COMPANY AFTER MARITAL DISPUTE.

Another:

HARLOW BILLIONS AT CENTER OF CALDWELL DIVORCE.

Then:

PREGNANT TRUST BENEFICIARY ACCUSED OF USING FAMILY FORTUNE AS REVENGE.

Preston denied leaking anything.

Nobody believed him.

The stories painted him as a hardworking executive caught between an emotional wife and a complicated financing dispute.

Sloane barely appeared.

My medical privacy complaint was described as a “personal disagreement.”

Then anonymous sources claimed I had hidden my wealth from Preston to manipulate the marriage.

That part gained traction.

Why hide it?

What kind of wife doesn't tell her husband?

For forty-eight hours, I said nothing.

Then Gabriel asked:

“Do you want to respond?”

“Yes.”

We issued one statement.

No attack.

No gossip.

No mention of Sloane beyond necessary facts.

I confirmed I was a beneficiary of the Harlow Trust.

I explained that investment decisions were governed by independent fiduciaries.

I stated that financing had been paused following disclosure concerns, not marital anger.

Then one final sentence:

My pregnancy and medical care are private matters, and I will not allow my unborn child to be used as a corporate asset, public-relations instrument, or bargaining tool.

That sentence changed the coverage.

Women understood it.

Parents understood it.

Employees understood it.

Then the nurse from Saint Aurelia became a target online.

Someone leaked her name.

I was furious.

“Maya had nothing to do with this.”

Gabriel agreed.

Saint Aurelia issued a statement protecting staff.

I personally told Dr. Porter that any legal costs Maya faced because of the incident would be covered through an independent support fund.

Not hush money.

Not control.

Protection.

Preston called me that night.

“You're making this bigger.”

“You made it bigger when you leaked it.”

“I didn't.”

“Then find out who did.”

“You're enjoying being Eleanor's granddaughter now.”

“No.”

“You could have told me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

Finally.

The question he should have asked days earlier.

I answered honestly.

“Because when we met, you treated me differently before you knew my last name.”

He went quiet.

“You liked me when you thought I couldn't do anything for you.”

“That isn't fair.”

“It was the reason I trusted you.”

“Then you lied.”

“I kept private information private.”

“From your husband.”

“Yes.”

He breathed.

“Why marry me if you didn't trust me?”

“I did trust you.”

“Not enough.”

“Apparently more than I should have.”

He hung up.

The next morning, Gabriel called.

“Preston has filed for emergency access to certain marital funds.”

“Let him.”

“He also requested an order preventing you from interfering with Caldwell financing.”

I almost laughed.

“Can he get it?”

“No.”

“Then why file?”

“To create a record suggesting you're acting vindictively.”

Narrative.

Preston was building one.

May you like

But this time, I had learned to build something stronger.

Evidence.
