Plot twist

Chapter 7 - MY DAUGHTER DECIDED SHE WAS DONE WAITING

At thirty-one weeks, labor started.

Real labor.

It began at 2:13 in the morning.

Pain.

Pressure.

Contractions.

Dr. Chen tried to slow things.

For twelve hours, we fought.

Then the baby's heart rate began dropping.

Dr. Chen entered with the expression doctors wear when the decision has already been made.

“We need to deliver.”

I started shaking.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“Is she going to be okay?”

“We have an excellent NICU.”

Not an answer.

The only honest answer available.

Nathaniel stood beside me.

Maggie held my hand.

I looked between them.

“I’m scared.”

Nathaniel kissed my forehead.

“So are we.”

That helped more than false certainty.

Emergency C-section.

Bright lights.

Cold room.

Pressure.

Voices.

Then—

a cry.

Tiny.

Angry.

Perfect.

My daughter entered the world weighing three pounds, nine ounces.

“She's beautiful.”

someone said.

I couldn't see.

“Please.”

Then a nurse brought her close for seconds.

Tiny face.

Dark hair.

Eyes closed.

My whole life changed.

“Her name?”

the nurse asked.

I had considered dozens.

Then I looked at Nathaniel through the operating room window.

Ward.

Protection.

Not ownership.

Not blood.

Choice.

“Margaret Grace.”

Maggie cried when she heard.

Nathaniel cried harder and denied it later.

Margaret spent thirty-seven days in the NICU.

I sat beside her every day.

David saw her only through photographs provided under court-approved conditions.

He requested access.

The court denied unsupervised contact while the criminal and protective proceedings continued.

He wrote:

She's my daughter too.

I answered through counsel:

Then start behaving like her father by respecting what keeps her safe.

He did not respond.
