Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE LAW FIRM THAT PROTECTED DAVID TURNED AGAINST HIM

Harlow, Mercer and Price initially called David's conduct a private domestic matter.

Then the financial subpoenas arrived.

Suddenly it wasn't private.

Client accounts were missing money.

Partners panicked.

The firm commissioned an independent forensic audit.

David's name disappeared from the website within forty-eight hours.

Then his name disappeared from the lobby.

Harlow & Price LLP.

Rebecca resigned anyway.

“So did you know?”

I asked.

“About the money? No.”

“About him?”

She looked ashamed.

“I knew he was cruel.”

That mattered.

“Why didn't you say anything?”

“Because he was powerful.”

“So were you.”

“Not as powerful.”

I stared.

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.”

That became a recurring lesson.

People don't need equal power to do something.

Sometimes they need enough courage to use whatever they have.

Rebecca testified about Christmas.

So did six others.

Every witness told a slightly different version.

That's normal.

But the core remained identical.

I asked for a chair.

David insulted me.

He pushed me.

I fell.

I asked for an ambulance.

He smashed my phone.

Then mocked me for having no family.

The camera supplied everything memory couldn't.
