Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE DIVORCE DISCOVERY PROVED I HAD BEEN PAYING FOR DEREK’S ESCAPE FROM ME LONG BEFORE HE ANNOUNCED HE WAS LEAVING

Naomi’s final marital-spending analysis arrived in month nine.

It was less dramatic than gossip.

More humiliating than I expected.

Derek had not emptied accounts.

He had not stolen hundreds thousands.

He had used many small amounts.

That felt intimate.

$312 dinner.

$847 hotel.

$1,200 flight.

$430 flowers? Not necessarily.

$2,100 resort.

The Vegas package.

A weekend in Scottsdale he told me was client event.

A concert.

A necklace.

Some from personal accounts.

Some joint.

Some company reimbursements later disputed.

Every line was ordinary alone.

Together, affair.

Daniel Cho explained marital dissipation claims depend law, timing, purpose.

We did not demand every penny.

Negotiated adjustments where appropriate.

I hated putting dollar value on betrayal.

“Why do we care about $312 dinner?” I asked.

“Because accounting.”

“I earn more in hour.”

“Principle still not reason to spend $20,000 legal fees chasing $312.”

I smiled.

“Finally lawyer says not litigate.”

“I say often.”

We chose material items.

Settlement.

No scorched earth.

Derek’s lawyers initially demanded broader spousal maintenance.

Prenup and incomes shaped.

His employment loss complicated.

But court would not simply make me finance him forever because he lost job through own conduct.

Still, law looked factors.

We resolved.

He received fair property interests.

I kept separate.

He kept separate.

Joint divided.

I bought townhouse interest.

No one “got everything.”

That made Facebook story less exciting.

Real life improved.

Then discovery exposed something emotionally sharp.

Six months before Vegas, Derek opened spreadsheet titled EXIT OPTIONS.

I almost laughed at his spreadsheet hypocrisy.

Rows:

House equity.

401(k).

Joint savings.

Personal debt.

Legal estimate.

Monthly expenses.

Paige? Not named.

One cell:

Avery likely pays to settle fast.

There.

He knew.

He had planned around my conflict avoidance.

Another:

Need cash before filing.

That likely connected credit line.

Then:

House leverage only if Avery signs.

Important.

He knew he needed signature.

That undermined claim general authorization.

Then later:

Alternative: authorization route?

No detail.

I closed.

Not murder plot.

Financial exit strategy.

But he planned months.

Meanwhile he still let me pay car.

Credit cards.

Vacation.

Health premiums.

He still kissed forehead.

Still complained I worked too much.

He had been preparing to leave while allowing me to continue stabilizing his finances.

That hurt more than sex some days.

Helen asked:

“What specifically?”

“The exploitation.”

“Define.”

“He let me invest in future he knew he was exiting.”

She nodded.

“You feel defrauded emotionally.”

“Yes.”

“Can court fix?”

“No.”

“Then?”

I hated.

Grieve.

No spreadsheet.

I spent weeks angry at myself for transfers.

Then realized voluntary care not stupidity.

At time, I believed marriage.

Derek knew change.

Information asymmetry.

In finance, material.

In love, devastating.

I stopped rewriting self as fool.

One evening I found receipt for suit I bought him before Las Vegas.

$1,600.

He wore it in chapel photograph.

That almost broke me.

I had paid partly for suit he used to “marry” mistress.

I laughed then cried.

Lauren said:

“Sell wedding photo?”

“What?”

“Your old wedding photo. Get $1,600 emotional offset.”

“Terrible.”

We laughed.

I donated some clothes he left after property process.

Not out of revenge.

Authorized.

Kept nothing sentimental except one Christmas ornament.

Why?

It was ours.

Good memory.

I learned not every good memory needs destroy.

Derek had sat beside me when mother died.

Real.

Also betrayed.

Both.

Then divorce final.

Fourteen months.

I stood in courthouse hallway with Daniel Cho.

“Congratulations?”

He asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Condolences?”

“Also weird.”

“Administrative completion?”

“Perfect.”

He laughed.

Final decree.

Marriage ended legally.

No audience.

No Derek present physically perhaps remote through counsel. Fine.

I drove home.

No music.

At townhouse I walked bedroom.

Wedding photograph had been face down since 2:43 morning.

I picked.

Looked.

Did not hate.

Put in box.

Then ordered takeout.

At 2:43 I slept through.

May you like

Only noticed next morning.

That felt bigger than decree.
