Chapter 10 - DEREK’S FINAL APOLOGY ARRIVED THREE YEARS AFTER OUR DIVORCE, AND FOR ONCE HE DID NOT ASK ME TO MAKE HIM FEEL BETTER

The letter came by mail.
No warning.
Return address Derek’s apartment.
I almost threw away.
Then saw handwriting.
Opened.
Avery,
I braced for blame.
None.
I sent the Vegas photograph because I wanted to hurt you.
I stopped.
Direct.
Continued.
I knew calling you pathetic would hurt because I had spent years feeling inferior beside you and instead of dealing with that honestly, I wanted you to feel smaller for one night.
There.
Paige believed our divorce was complete because I told her it was. She knew our relationship began while we were married, but I lied to her about how far separation had gone because I wanted her to see me as someone choosing her, not someone cheating and hiding.
Accurate.
I used money you were helping provide to support a relationship I hid from you. I complained that you controlled money while continuing to let you pay obligations I was capable of handling but did not want to prioritize.
My eyes burned.
I tried to obtain credit using your financial information and represented that you had authorized me when you had not. I told myself you would eventually sign because I believed I knew what made financial sense. I understand now that this was not efficiency. It was entitlement.
That word.
Permission.
I had spent so long benefiting from your competence that I began resenting you for being competent.
I laughed sadly.
Then:
You were never pathetic. I used that word because I needed you to feel smaller so I could feel powerful for one night.
Finally.
Not enough to repair.
Enough true.
I do not ask you to forgive me. I do not ask to meet. I do not ask you to respond.
Good.
I hope you have a life where no one mistakes what you give voluntarily for something they are entitled to take.
I cried.
Not because I wanted Derek.
Because there he was.
The man I needed six years earlier.
Too late.
Some growth arrives after relationship.
Still growth.
I showed Helen.
“Will respond?”
“No.”
“Why keep?”
“Accountability rare.”
She nodded.
Noah knew letter arrived.
He did not ask contents.
Eventually I told.
He said:
“Does it change anything?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I’m less angry.”
“Do you forgive?”
I looked.
“Maybe some.”
He nodded.
No jealousy.
Then:
“Does it make you want go back?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Then seems useful.”
That was Noah.
No drama.
Derek’s life moved.
He worked.
Paid.
Maybe dated.
I did not follow.
Lauren once said he got engaged again.
I held hand.
“Do not tell me.”
“Sorry.”
Gossip boundary held.
My happy life did not require watching.
Noah and I traveled.
He cooked terribly.
I learned.
We argued.
Important.
First serious argument was money.
Vacation home rental.
Noah wanted expensive place.
I said waste.
He felt judged.
Instead of mocking, he said:
“When you say that tone, I feel like I’m being audited.”
I froze.
Old Derek.
But Noah was not Derek.
I said:
“You’re right.”
We discussed.
He said:
“I can afford my share.”
I said:
“I know.”
“I’m not asking you pay.”
“I know.”
We picked compromise.
No resentment.
Conflict not danger.
One evening Noah raised voice over contractor issue.
My body shut.
He noticed.
Stopped.
“Do you need space?”
“Yes.”
He left room.
Later:
“I’m sorry I raised voice.”
“I’m sorry I disappeared.”
“No apology required for nervous system.”
We learned.
Safe love not never conflict.
It repairs without punishment.
A year later Noah proposed.
He knelt at kitchen.
I said:
“Prenup.”
He blinked.
“Can I finish?”
I laughed.
“Fine.”
He finished.
I said yes.
Then separate attorneys.
He did not pout.
Noah’s attorney negotiated provisions.
Mine pushed back.
He joked:
“Romance survives redlines.”
It did.
Separate accounts.
Joint household.
Emergency access through estate planning.
No passwords exchanged casually.
No one offended.
Wedding small.
Lauren maid of honor.
No mention Vegas.
No revenge speech.
My vow:
“I choose you because you stand beside me, not because either of us needs the other to carry what belongs to us.”
Noah:
“I promise to ask before helping, listen when answer is no, and burn fewer dinners.”
Laughter.
Married.
Not proof I healed completely.
May you like
Proof I chose again.
Different.
