Chapter 3 - THE COLD TRUTH OF LOGISTICS

Harold’s hand froze mid-air as he attempted to guide Victor toward the VIP table under the tent.

The color began to drain from my mother’s face, her perfect makeup suddenly looking like a mask painted on dry clay.

"What... what do you mean?" Harold stammered, his voice losing all of its confident, boisterous energy.

"Emily is just... she's always been a bit dramatic, Mr. Hale."

"She probably just went to the store to get more ice."

"Emily Carter does not get ice for your parties, Harold," Victor said, his tone carrying the absolute weight of a federal decree.

"She manages the entire northeastern supply chain for Hartwell Freight Systems."

"She is the primary decision-maker on the MedSupply buildout contract."

"And she is the only reason your construction firm was even considered for the bid in the first place."

Madison, who had walked over to show off her silver dress, stopped dead in her tracks, her mouth opening in silent shock.

"Emily?" Madison whispered, her voice cracking. "But she works from her apartment in sweatpants."

"She doesn't even have an office."

Victor slowly turned his head to look at my sister, his gaze so sharp and piercing that she instinctively took a step back.

"She doesn't need an office to control thirty-seven employees and a twelve-million-dollar budget, Madison," Victor replied coldly.

"And she certainly doesn't need to be scrubbing your birthday dishes while you sit in a silk robe."

My father took a sudden, panicked step forward, his hands trembling as he reached into his jacket pocket.

"Victor, please, let's step into my study," Harold pleaded, his eyes darting toward the whispering crowd of guests.

"We can discuss the contract parameters privately, there’s no need to bring family matters into a business discussion."

"The business discussion is officially over, Harold," Victor said, his hands slipping into his trouser pockets with a calm, final authority.

"The MedSupply contract requires a partner who operates with absolute integrity, both in the office and in their home."

"I cannot, in good conscience, award a multi-million-dollar contract to a man who treats his own daughter like unpaid domestic labor."

"And quite frankly, after what Emily told me, I am launching a full forensic audit of your previous construction bids with our firm."

Patricia let out a sharp, horrified gasp, her wineglass slipping from her fingers and shattering loudly against the slate patio.

The dark red liquid splattered across the bottom of Madison’s silver dress, but no one moved to clean it.

"Mr. Hale, please!" Patricia wailed, her high-society composure entirely evaporating into a mask of raw, primitive panic.

"We are a close-knit family! It was just a joke!"

"I don't find financial exploitation amusing, Patricia," Victor said, turning his back on them without another word.

He walked back toward his black sedan, his boots clicking sharply against the gravel driveway like a countdown to their ruin.

As the car pulled away, leaving my family standing under the glittering lights of their empty, useless tent, the true cost of their pride finally began to sink in.
