Chapter 7 - THE SOVEREIGN FUTURE

The morning sun of a new spring broke through the gray fog of the Manhattan skyline, painting the water of the harbor in shades of gold and amber.

I stood on the wide stone terrace of my new penthouse apartment, the cool wind rustling the soft wool of my cardigan.

It was not a rented space, and it did not belong to my parents' trust; my name was the only one written on the deed.

My door.

My lock.

My future.

Victor Hale walked out onto the terrace, carrying two fresh cups of coffee, a warm, respectful smile on his handsome face.

He handed me a cup, his fingers gently brushing against mine with a steady, reassuring warmth that made my heart feel completely whole.

"The board has officially finalized the restructuring, Emily," Victor said, his deep voice carrying a quiet, proud satisfaction.

"The MedSupply contract has been awarded to our new, fully compliant regional development partner."

"And your promotion to Vice President of Global Logistics has been approved by the board of directors."

"Thank you, Victor," I smiled, looking out at the massive ships moving slowly across the sparkling blue water of the harbor.

They looked so small from this height, so distant, like the memories of the cold kitchen and the dirty dishes of my sister’s party.

The people who had tried to make me feel invisible, who had treated me like a spare chair in their garage, were gone, lost in the quiet noise of the city below.

The old script of my silence was permanently destroyed.

My independent fortress was built.

And my real, beautiful life had just officially begun.
