Chapter 3 - THE CRYPTIC LEDGER

The transition from a celebratory wedding night to a cold, tactical battlefield required a silent, unyielding determination that lasted through the dead of night.
By 2:00 AM, the grand living room of the estate had been turned into a makeshift command post, with Frank setting up his forensic laptop on the dining table.
I stood beside the window, my eyes fixed on the dark, empty driveway as the rain continued to beat against the glass with a rhythmic, hostile cadence.
Caleb sat in the leather armchair across from me, his hands secured in temporary plastic zip-ties that Robert had insisted on using to keep him from leaving the house.
"The files on this drive are incredibly detailed, Caleb," Frank said, his fingers rapidly entering decryption codes into the terminal.
"But the digital signatures on these deleted insurance forms don't match Katherine’s handwriting or her personal email registries."
"In fact, the IP addresses used to wipe the Richmond database five years ago didn't originate from Katherine’s family home at all."
Caleb’s confident posture instantly stiffened, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the glowing monitor.
"What do you mean they don't match?" Caleb demanded, his voice rising in a sudden, defensive panic.
"The private investigator I hired, Dr. Sterling, gave me these files three months ago!"
"He showed me the signed non-disclosure agreement with Katherine’s legal name at the bottom!"
"Dr. Robert Sterling was the chief financial consultant for the Thorne Holding Group before it went bankrupt, Caleb," Mark Ellison, our family attorney, explained as he walked into the room carrying a secure folder.
"And he is currently facing federal embezzlement charges in New York for siphoning forty million dollars from their employee retirement fund."
"He didn't give you this proof to help you find justice for Beatrice."
"He gave you this proof to manipulate you into executing a corporate revenge plot on his behalf."
"Because under the terms of the original Thorne trust, if Katherine is declared mentally or physically incompetent due to a 'highly unstable family crisis,' the remaining twelve-million-dollar patents automatically transfer to Sterling's holding firm."
"They used your grief, Caleb," I said, my voice dropping into a soft, sorrowful whisper as I walked over to my son.
"They used the memory of your niece to turn you into a weapon against the very woman who loved you."
Caleb stared at the monitor, his face turning an instant, bloodless shade of gray as the realization of his monumental error began to settle over his chest.
"No," he gasped, his body trembling violently as he looked toward the guest hallway.
"I... I locked her phone in the safe."
"I told her that if she didn't sign the voluntary trust waiver tonight, I would ensure the local authorities arrested her for Beatrice's death."
"She was so terrified, Mom... she was shaking on the floor."
"And I just stood there, believing I was finally closing the ledger of our family's pain."

"We need to find Katherine right now, Caleb," Robert said, his hand resting flat against his son's shoulder as he pulled out the silver pocket knife to slice the zip-ties.
"Before the people who actually killed Beatrice realize their trap has been exposed."
