Chapter 5 - THE GLASS CEILING SHATTERS

The grand executive boardroom on the ninetieth floor of the Richmond Plaza was a breathtaking monument to corporate arrogance and greed.

At exactly 9:00 AM on Monday, the room was bathed in the crisp, golden light of the skyline, but the atmosphere inside was thick with the scent of an execution.

Thirty of the city’s most prominent investment bankers, board directors, and high-society attorneys sat in high-backed velvet chairs around the massive mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat Dr. Robert Sterling, his tailored gray business suit immaculate, his face carrying a smug, victorious grin.

Beside him stood Veronica, Katherine’s cold-blooded stepmother, her gold cross necklace catching the light, her fingers tracing the edge of the transfer deeds.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Sterling announced, his smooth, theatrical voice carrying a chilling, artificial sweetness.

"Due to the sudden, tragic emotional instability of our primary trustee, Katherine, the family court has granted our committee full guardianship over the shipping patents."

"We are ready to finalize the integration of the Thorne assets into our holding group."

He raised a gold-plated fountain pen, preparing to slide the nib across the final signature line of the multi-million-dollar agreement.

"The signature on those deeds constitutes federal wire fraud, Sterling," a cold, clear voice cut through the boardroom like a razor-sharp wire.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were violently thrown open, the wood panels vibrating against the stone frame.

I walked through the threshold, my head held high, my posture rigid, commanding, and completely unbreakable.

I wore a sharp, tailored black power suit, my blonde hair pulled back into a flawless, professional chignon, my fingers clutching the silver forensic briefcase.

Beside me walked Katherine, her face pale, but her head held high, her eyes carrying a lethal, crystalline focus that made her stepmother’s breath halt.

And beside her stood Caleb, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, his body forming a silent, impenetrable wall of protection.

"Katherine?" Veronica gasped, the gold pen slipping from her shaking fingers and clattering loudly against the polished mahogany table.

Her face turned an instant, pasty shade of gray under the bright lights, her knees buckling slightly as the reality of our return struck her mind.

"What is the meaning of this? You are supposed to be under medical evaluation!"

"The only people undergoing evaluation tonight are the ones facing thirty years in a federal maximum-security facility, Veronica," Captain Marcus Bennett announced.

He stepped onto the platform, flanked by six armed federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their gold shields gleaming under the lights.

"We have the toxicological reports proving you systematically poisoned Katherine's father, and we have the live video feed of your meeting with the hit-and-run driver five years ago."

Marcus plugged the secure digital drive from our safe house into the room's main media console.

The massive, sixty-foot projector screens behind the podium instantly illuminated, displaying a high-definition document scan that made the entire room of directors gasp.

The screens displayed the original, uncorrupted banking transactions showing Veronica siphoning forty million dollars to cover her Panama debts.

Beside the statement lay the physical, unedited video of the black sedan on the night of Beatrice’s death, capturing Veronica’s own face behind the wheel.

"My God," the board chairman whispered, standing up from his chair in deep, professional disgust.

"This... this is monstrous."

"They were framing the daughter to hide the mother's murder."
