Part 1: The Black Folder / Chapter 1 / 4

Part 1: The Black Folder

My name is Megan Carter.

Twelve days after giving birth to my son, I walked into my divorce hearing carrying him in one arm and a black leather folder in the other.

Most people looked at the baby first.

Then they looked at me.

My pale face.

The dark circles beneath my eyes.

The slow, careful way I walked after an emergency C-section.

They saw a woman who looked exhausted.

Broken.

Easy to defeat.

That was exactly what my husband wanted everyone to believe.

Ryan Carter was already seated at the far end of the conference table inside Harrison & Fields, one of Charlotte's most prestigious corporate law firms.

The glass walls overlooked the city skyline.

Everything about the room screamed wealth.

Power.

Control.

Ryan loved places like this.

He believed expensive surroundings automatically made him the smartest man in them.

He stood as I entered, flashing the charming smile that had fooled almost everyone for nearly eight years.

"Megan," he said loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"You actually came."

His voice carried fake concern.

"I wasn't sure you'd be strong enough after... everything."

I ignored him.

Instead, I gently adjusted Noah's tiny blanket as he slept peacefully against my chest.

His tiny fingers curled around the edge of my sweater.

Completely unaware that his entire future was about to be decided inside this room.

Ryan watched me carefully.

"You really brought the baby?"

"I didn't have anyone else," I answered calmly.

Ashley Brooks shifted in her chair beside him.

She wore a cream-colored maternity dress that perfectly highlighted her growing pregnancy.

One hand rested possessively on her stomach.

The diamond bracelet Ryan had bought her sparkled beneath the conference room lights.

She noticed me looking.

A slow smile spread across her face.

"I think it's beautiful that Noah could witness his parents moving on peacefully."

Peacefully.

The word almost made me laugh.

Three weeks earlier, Ashley had been introducing herself as Ryan's "strategic business consultant."

Now she sat beside him like a wife.

My replacement.

Ryan slid a stack of documents toward me.

"The settlement is generous."

I didn't touch them.

He continued speaking as though rehearsing a speech.

"You keep the townhouse."

"I keep the company."

"We both move on."

Simple.

Efficient.

Clean.

At least that was the version he wanted everyone else to believe.

Our attorneys remained silent.

Two representatives from Carter Innovations' board of directors sat near the window reviewing financial reports.

The company's outside auditor quietly organized several binders.

Ryan had insisted they attend.

He wanted everything finalized today.

He wanted witnesses when I surrendered.

He had no idea those witnesses would become the biggest mistake of his life.

Ashley leaned forward.

"You've been through enough stress."

"You deserve a fresh start."

There it was again.

That carefully practiced sympathy.

The kind that sounded compassionate until you noticed the satisfaction hiding underneath.

I finally looked directly at her.

"A fresh start."

She nodded.

"Exactly."

I smiled politely.

"I couldn't agree more."

Ryan relaxed slightly.

He mistook my calmness for surrender.

He always confused silence with weakness.

That misunderstanding had built his entire career.

The lead attorney cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Carter, before signing, are there any remaining concerns regarding marital assets?"

Ryan answered before I could.

"No."

"We've already disclosed everything."

Everything.

The word echoed in my mind.

Everything.

That wasn't true.

Not even close.

I rested my hand lightly on the black folder.

Ryan noticed.

"You've been carrying that thing everywhere."

"Hospital."

"Parking lot."

"Even now."

He laughed.

"What is it?"

"A diary?"

Ashley chuckled beside him.

"Maybe baby pictures."

Several people smiled politely.

No one else understood why I hadn't let the folder leave my sight for nearly two weeks.

Inside were no photographs of Noah.

No sentimental letters.

No emotional journal.

Inside sat enough evidence to destroy careers.

Including Ryan's.

But I wasn't ready.

Not yet.

Instead, I looked out the window.

Charlotte stretched endlessly beneath the afternoon sun.

Traffic crawled through downtown.

People hurried along sidewalks.

Ordinary lives continued.

No one outside knew that one of the city's fastest-growing technology companies was about to implode.

Ryan interrupted my thoughts.

"Megan."

"Please."

"Let's be adults."

His tone softened.

"You've always been emotional."

"I understand."

"But this is business."

Business.

That word brought back memories I had spent years trying to ignore.

When Ryan founded Carter Innovations, we had almost nothing.

Our first office was a rented storage room behind an old printing shop.

The roof leaked every time it rained.

The heating barely worked during winter.

Ryan handled investors.

I handled everything else.

Payroll.

Accounting.

Vendor contracts.

Hiring.

Customer service.

Even cleaning the office bathroom after midnight because we couldn't afford staff.

Every dollar mattered.

Every decision mattered.

For three years, we worked side by side.

When investors finally arrived, Ryan became the public face of the company.

Confident.

Charismatic.

Visionary.

I quietly stepped into the background.

Not because I lacked ability.

Because Ryan said families needed sacrifices.

"People trust male CEOs more," he once told me.

"You understand."

Back then...

I did.

Or at least I thought I did.

Then success changed him.

First came the late meetings.

Then the unexplained business trips.

Then Ashley.

Always Ashley.

She appeared at company events.

Board dinners.

Investor conferences.

Ryan introduced her exactly the same way every single time.

"This is Ashley."

"Our consultant."

Nothing more.

Whenever I questioned it, he laughed.

"You're imagining things."

"She's twenty-nine."

"She admires my leadership."

"Don't embarrass yourself by acting jealous."

Eventually...

I stopped asking.

Not because I believed him.

Because I realized he enjoyed watching me doubt myself.

The room returned to focus as Ryan tapped the divorce papers again.

"This is getting ridiculous."

"Sign."

His attorney slid a pen toward me.

I picked it up.

Ryan smiled.

Ashley smiled.

Even one of the board members relaxed.

Everyone assumed the fight was over.

Instead of signing...

I placed the pen back on the table.

"I'm sorry," I said quietly.

"I almost forgot."

Ryan frowned.

"Forgot what?"

I gently opened the black folder.

Every sound inside the conference room disappeared.

One by one...

I removed several sealed envelopes.

None of them had my handwriting.

Each bore the official logo of different financial institutions.

Then came hotel invoices.

Travel manifests.

Expense reports.

Private security records.

Ashley sat up straighter.

Ryan's confident smile weakened almost imperceptibly.

"What exactly are you doing?" he asked.

"I organized everything."

"For today's meeting."

The lead attorney looked confused.

"Mrs. Carter... these documents were not included during discovery."

"I know."

"I wasn't finished collecting them."

Ryan laughed nervously.

"This isn't a criminal trial."

"You can't just surprise everyone with random paperwork."

"No," I replied.

"I can't."

"Which is why I didn't come alone."

Every face turned toward me.

The conference room door opened.

A gray-haired attorney entered carrying another stack of sealed files.

Behind him walked Carter Innovations' independent ethics officer.

Then the chairwoman of the audit committee.

Ryan slowly stood.

"What is this?"

The gray-haired attorney ignored him completely.

He walked directly to me.

"Mrs. Carter."

"Before any settlement is signed..."

"...would you like the board to review the evidence proving that Mr. Ryan Carter has been secretly transferring company funds into accounts controlled by the woman sitting beside him?"

The room froze.

Ashley's face instantly turned white.

May you like

Ryan slammed both hands onto the conference table.

"What the hell did you just say?"
