Plot twist
Part 1: The Black Folder / Chapter 3 / 4

Part 3: The Witness Nobody Expected

Ryan didn't speak.

For the first time in the eight years I had known him, the man who always had an answer sat frozen in absolute silence.

The recording had ended.

Yet the final sentence continued to echo through the conference room.

"I'll let my own wife take the blame."

No one moved.

No one even reached for a glass of water.

The board members stared at Ryan as though they were looking at a stranger.

Ashley slowly removed her hand from his arm.

She looked frightened now—not for me.

For herself.

Ryan suddenly forced out a laugh.

A loud, artificial laugh.

"Come on."

"That's obviously edited."

He pointed toward the recorder.

"Anyone can manipulate audio."

His attorney immediately nodded.

"My client is correct."

"Without authentication, that recording has no evidentiary value."

I wasn't surprised.

Ryan always believed every problem could be talked away.

The gray-haired attorney simply smiled.

"I'm glad you brought that up."

He reached into his briefcase and produced another folder.

"The recording has already been examined by an independent forensic audio laboratory."

He slid the certification across the table.

"No edits."

"No cuts."

"No digital manipulation."

Ryan snatched the report.

His eyes raced across the page.

The confidence drained from his face line by line.

"This..."

"...this doesn't prove context."

The attorney folded his hands.

"Then perhaps context will help."

He nodded toward the conference room door.

"Please come in."

The door opened once again.

A woman in her early forties stepped inside wearing a charcoal-gray business suit.

She carried a laptop under one arm.

Ryan frowned.

"I don't know her."

I did.

Very well.

Her name was Olivia Bennett.

For six years she had served as Carter Innovations' Director of Internal Compliance.

Most employees barely knew she existed.

Ryan certainly hadn't paid much attention to her.

That had been his mistake.

Olivia placed her laptop on the table.

"Good afternoon."

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

"I was instructed by the Board to conduct an internal review after several irregular transactions triggered our automated compliance system."

Ryan interrupted.

"Why wasn't I informed?"

Olivia looked directly at him.

"Because you disabled the notification settings."

Another silence.

She clicked a key on her laptop.

A timeline appeared on the large conference room monitor.

Dates.

Transfers.

Vendor approvals.

International wire payments.

Every transaction connected to another.

Every arrow led to the same destination.

Blue Horizon Consulting.

Then another company.

Northgate Logistics.

Then another.

Silver Crest Holdings.

Three different businesses.

Three different owners.

Yet all of them ultimately transferred money into the same investment account.

Ashley's investment account.

Ryan shook his head.

"Coincidence."

Olivia clicked again.

The screen changed.

Corporate registration forms appeared side by side.

"The three companies were registered by different individuals."

She paused.

"They also used the same internet connection."

Ryan stared.

"The same printer."

Another click.

"The same office suite."

Another.

"The same security camera."

The final image appeared.

Ashley entering the office carrying a box of incorporation documents.

The timestamp read sixteen months earlier.

Ashley's breathing became uneven.

"I..."

"...I was helping."

Olivia nodded politely.

"I'm sure you were."

Ryan suddenly slammed the table.

"This proves nothing."

The chairwoman looked disappointed.

"It proves considerably more than you seem willing to admit."

Ryan stood.

"I'm leaving."

"You are welcome to try," she replied.

"But until this meeting concludes..."

"...company security has been instructed not to allow any executive records to leave the building."

Ryan froze.

"You had security waiting?"

"I've learned that preparation is usually wise."

His attorney leaned close and whispered something into his ear.

Ryan listened.

Then slowly sat back down.

His arrogance had begun to crack.

I recognized the look.

It was the same expression he'd worn years ago when our first investor almost pulled out.

Only this time...

There was no way to charm his way back.

Olivia continued.

"Initially, we believed this was simply financial misconduct."

She looked at me.

"Mrs. Carter changed that."

Ryan's eyes snapped toward me.

"What does that mean?"

I took a slow breath.

"Twelve days ago..."

"...someone anonymously sent me a package."

Ashley looked down.

She already knew.

Inside had been more than hotel photographs.

There was a flash drive.

At first I thought it contained family pictures.

Instead...

It held months of internal emails.

Deleted emails.

Emails someone had tried very hard to erase.

Olivia inserted the flash drive into her laptop.

Hundreds of messages appeared.

Some were ordinary.

Others...

Were devastating.

Ryan stared at the screen.

"No..."

Olivia opened one email.

The sender:

Ryan Carter.

The recipient:

Ashley Brooks.

The subject line:

Move It Before Quarter End.

The body contained only one sentence.

"Use Megan's old authorization profile if Finance starts asking questions."

Every person in the room turned toward Ryan.

His attorney slowly closed his notebook.

He stopped taking notes.

Ryan pointed wildly at the screen.

"Those emails are fake."

Olivia calmly answered.

"They came from the company's archived backup server."

Ryan's face turned pale.

"I deleted those."

The words escaped before he realized what he had said.

Complete silence.

The attorney beside him closed his eyes.

Ryan blinked.

Too late.

He had heard himself.

Everyone else had too.

The chairwoman spoke softly.

"Mr. Carter..."

"...did you just acknowledge deleting company communications?"

Ryan tried to recover.

"I meant..."

"...if they ever existed..."

"...I..."

He couldn't finish.

Ashley suddenly stood.

"This isn't fair."

Every head turned toward her.

Tears filled her eyes.

"You've all decided he's guilty."

"No," the chairwoman replied.

"He decided that himself."

Ashley looked at Ryan.

Ryan refused to meet her eyes.

That was the moment she understood.

If this collapsed...

He would sacrifice her first.

Just like he had planned to sacrifice me.

She slowly stepped away from his chair.

Ryan whispered urgently,

"Ashley..."

"Sit down."

She ignored him.

Instead, she looked toward me.

For several long seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally she whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Ryan's head snapped toward her.

"What are you doing?"

Ashley wiped away a tear.

"I'm done lying."

The room collectively held its breath.

"I didn't know about the missing money at first."

Ryan's eyes widened.

"Ashley."

"Stop."

She continued as though she hadn't heard him.

"He told me the payments were approved bonuses."

"Then he said the Board hid profits to avoid taxes."

"I believed him."

Ryan's voice became sharp.

"Don't say another word."

Ashley laughed bitterly.

"You promised we'd build a future together."

She rested a trembling hand on her stomach.

"You said once the divorce was over..."

"...everything would belong to us."

Ryan whispered,

"It still can."

Ashley slowly shook her head.

"No."

She reached into her designer handbag.

"I brought something today."

My heart skipped.

She removed a small white envelope.

"I was going to destroy this."

She placed it gently on the conference table.

"But I think Megan deserves to know the truth."

Ryan lunged across the table.

"Don't!"

Two company security officers immediately grabbed his arms before he could reach the envelope.

The room erupted into chaos.

"Let me go!"

Ryan shouted.

"You don't understand!"

Ashley was crying openly now.

"I do understand."

She looked at me with guilt written across her face.

"The baby..."

She swallowed hard.

"The reason Ryan missed Noah's birth..."

"...wasn't because of a business meeting."

She pushed the envelope toward me.

Inside was a hotel invoice.

A luxury suite.

Champagne service.

A private photographer.

And attached to it...

A reservation confirmation for a ceremony that had been planned on the very night I was rushed into emergency surgery.

May you like

Ryan hadn't been in a meeting.

He had been preparing to marry Ashley before our divorce was even filed.
