Part 2: The Awakening

The line rang three times before a rough, gravelly voice answered. “Hello?”
"Dad," I choked out, the word breaking into a wet sob against the screen. "Dad, please... Javier's mother... they beat me. They tried to force me to sign over the condo. Javier stood outside the door and watched."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the line. For five seconds, the only sound was my own frantic breathing echoing in the quiet hotel room. Then, the sleepy haze vanished entirely from Alexander Carter's voice, replaced by an unnerving, sub-zero calm that I hadn't heard since my childhood.
“Where are you, Sofia?” he asked, his words dropping like weights.
"The Rosewood Mansion hotel. Room 412."
“Stay exactly where you are. I’m coming.”
The line went dead.
Carmen laughed, a harsh, mocking sound that rattled the crystal chandelier above. "Your father? Alexander? The man who has been a ghost in your life for a decade? What is a broken-down ex-husband going to do against the Robles family, Sofia? We own half the commercial real estate in this district. Your little condo is just the beginning."
But I knew my father better than she did. Alexander hadn't disappeared because he was weak; he had walked away from the high-society circles of Dallas because he despised the very greed Carmen was flaunting.
Exactly twenty-eight minutes later, the grand double doors of the suite didn't just open—they were blown inward, the wood splintering loudly against the frame.
Two massive men in sharp, tailored black suits stepped inside, immediately flanking the doorway. Behind them walked my father. Alexander didn't look like a millionaire executive; his white shirt was wrinkled at the sleeves, his tie was gone, and his face was entirely drained of color. But the presence he radiated made the entire room turn cold.
"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Carmen shrieked, stepping back as her private security guards in the suite instantly reached into their jackets. "This is a private bridal suite! Get out before I have my son arrest you!"
Alexander didn't even look at her. His eyes locked onto me, taking in the ripped dress, the blood on my lip, and the bruises on my shoulders. In two swift strides, he was on his knees beside me, his large, calloused hands impossibly gentle as they cradled my face.
"Baby girl," he whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing grief.
"Dad," I whimpered, burying my face into his shoulder.
Alexander stood up slowly, turning his body toward Carmen. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides, but his face remained a terrifyingly calm mask of iron. He looked past her to the connecting door, where Javier had just stepped out, his face suddenly pale as he recognized the man standing in his suite.
"Javier Robles," Alexander spoke, his voice dangerously soft. "You are an attorney, correct? You understand the baseline parameters of corporate structure, asset liability, and contract law?"

Javier swallowed hard, his arrogant posture instantly deflating. "Mr. Carter, look... this was a domestic dispute. It got out of hand. Sofia was being stubborn about the prenuptial amendments—"
"Thirty years ago, before I retired from public view, I didn't just build a real estate firm, Javier," Alexander cut in, taking a single step forward that made the Robles guards instinctively freeze. "I founded the holding group that underwrites eighty percent of the commercial bank loans your mother’s family uses to fund their entire portfolio. I don't just own your debt. I own the ground your empire is built on."
