Part 3: The Liquidation of Derek Rivers

At 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the private hangar at Chicago Midway was completely bathed in a cold, grey autumn light. The luxury jet had barely completed its taxi sequence when three uniform state marshals and a veteran corporate fraud investigator stepped onto the tarmac, their heavy boots crunching against the wet pavement.

Derek stepped down the airbridge first, his briefcase clutched tightly in his hand, his handsome face looking tired but entirely arrogant as he turned to assist Tiffany. Tiffany was still wearing her fitted ivory suit, her diamonds catching the morning light as she laughed loudly about their dinner reservations at the Gold Coast.

"Derek," an ice-cold voice called out from the shadow of a parked black Bentley.

Derek froze, his smile dying instantly as Cameron stepped into the light, flanked by Gabrielle Thompson, who held a certified stack of federal asset injunctions.

"Cameron?" Derek muttered, a sudden, nervous sweat breaking out along his collar. "What is the meaning of this? We just got back from the Miami retreat. The board is expecting me at the headquarters for the final acquisition signature."

"The acquisition is dead, Derek," Gabrielle said, stepping forward with an absolute, clinical stillness as she handed the paperwork directly to his chief legal counsel. "And so is your commercial indemnity contract. As of 8:45 a.m., an emergency protection order and a fault-based divorce petition have been formally filed in Cook County Court on behalf of my sister, Simone."

Tiffany stepped forward, her glossy lips contorting into a sneer of pure high-society malice. "This is a private family matter! Who do you think you are, bringing state lawyers onto a private runway? Derek owns the leasing rights to this entire terminal!"

"He doesn't own the shoes on his feet anymore, Tiffany," Cameron delivered the final verdict, his gaze cutting through his younger brother like a physical blade. "The jet you treated like your personal throne belongs to my primary technology trust. The commercial credit lines backing your luxury penthouse were revoked ten minutes ago. And the video of you putting your hands on my pregnant sister-in-law has already been streamed directly to the state medical licensing board and every primary donor in your development network."

Derek’s briefcase slipped from his hand, clattering loudly against the concrete tarmac as his entire face went completely hollow. "Cameron... please. You can't do this. The firm... my entire net worth is tied into those expansion shares. If you freeze the accounts, the creditors will foreclose on the estate by noon."

"You should have thought about the ledger before you called your wife's assault 'drama,' Derek," Cameron said, turning his back on his brother without a single hint of hesitation.

I stepped out from the rear seat of the Bentley, my cream cardigan wrapped tightly around my shoulders, my face calm, steady, and entirely safe under the protection of the Rivers family's true leadership. I looked at Tiffany, whose glamorous ivory suit now looked completely cheap and ruined in the damp Chicago wind as the marshals stepped forward to log her personal electronics as state evidence for felony coercion.

The old high-society illusion was completely dismantled, the fraudulent contracts were liquidated, and my daughter's future legacy was entirely secure. I took a deep, clean breath of the autumn air, holding my belly close as Cameron closed the door of the vehicle. The ledger was perfectly balanced, and we were finally safe, protected, and home.
