Plot twist
PART 1: THE MARBLE ARENA / Chapter 3 / 3

PART 3: THE FINAL PROTOCOL

The glass of the front door shattered as a heavy boot kicked it inward.

Three men in dark tactical gear stepped into the grand foyer, their weapons drawn.

The socialites screamed, scattering toward the dining room like birds.

The lead man, a scarred operative named Viktor, looked directly at Sloane.

"Did you get the drive?" he barked.

"No!" Sloane panicked, pointing at Maya. "The maid’s phone has the master backup! She’s broadcasting the audio!"

Viktor turned his weapon toward Maya and Lily.

Maya didn't think.

She grabbed Lily, threw her body over her daughter, and pressed her back against the marble pillar.

"Grant," Maya yelled. "The system override is 4-0-4!"

Grant was already diving behind the mahogany reception desk.

His fingers flew across the control panel built into the woodwork.

"Whitaker Systems Security Protocol Delta!" Grant shouted into the voice-activation mic.

"Initiate physical lockdown!"

A loud, hydraulic hiss echoed through the mansion.

Heavy steel shutters slammed down over every window and door, cutting off the afternoon light.

The grand foyer was plunged into darkness, illuminated only by the red emergency lights near the ceiling.

Viktor fired a burst toward the desk, the bullets ricocheting off the reinforced wood.

"Sloane, get the phone!" Viktor roared through the dark.

Sloane lunged toward Maya, her hands scratching at Maya's arms, trying to rip the smartphone away.

"Give it to me, you worthless b*tch!" Sloane screamed, her manicured fingers drawing blood on Maya's neck.

Despite the pain, Maya held tight to the device.

She knew that if Sloane got the phone, the evidence of the Varga conspiracy would be wiped from the local network.

Suddenly, a loud chime echoed from the ceiling speakers.

It wasn't music.

It was the automated voice of the Lake Forest Police Department.

"Perimeter breached. Federal authorities have entered the estate gardens."

Grant stepped out from behind the desk, holding a heavy metal flashlight.

He swung it with everything he had, striking Viktor across the wrist.

The weapon clattered onto the floor.

At the same moment, the steel shutters on the front door exploded outward as the regional SWAT team breached the house.

Flashbangs blinded the room, followed by the deafening roar of orders.

"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!"

Within seconds, Viktor and his men were pinned to the floor, their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

Sloane was pulled off Maya by two female agents, her cream silk loungewear covered in dust and blood.

"You ruined my life!" Sloane shrieked at Maya as she was dragged away.

"You're nothing but a maid!"

Maya slowly stood up, ignoring her bleeding neck.

She lifted Lily into her arms, holding her tight against her chest.

Lily was shaking, but she wasn't crying.

She reached down and picked up the five thousand dollars in cash that Sloane had dropped on the floor during the struggle.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, handing the stack of bills to Maya.

"The lady dropped her dancing money."

Grant walked over to them, his uniform watch scratched, his breathing heavy.

He looked at the cash, then at Maya's calm, defiant eyes.

"Jonah," Grant said, his voice echoing in the ruined foyer.

"Yes, Mr. Whitaker?" the manager asked, stepping out from the shadows.

"Clear out the master guest wing," Grant said, looking directly at Maya.

"Maya and Lily are staying here as long as they need to."

"And Jonah?"

"Sir?"

"Call the corporate office. Maya is the new Director of Internal Security for the residential division."

"Her salary starts at two hundred thousand a year."

Maya stared at him, her heart thumping against her ribs.

"Mr. Whitaker... I don't have a degree in security," she said.

Grant smiled, a genuine, warm expression that reached his eyes.

"You protected my entire life's work with an old phone and a mop, Maya," Grant said.

"You have all the qualifications I need."

Lily looked at the ruined marble floor, then at Grant.

"Can we play the butterfly song now?" she asked.

Grant laughed, a rich, honest sound that filled the empty house.

"Yes, Lily," Grant said, walking them toward the warm kitchen.

May you like

"We can play whatever song you want."

The storm outside was still howling, but inside the Whitaker house, the air was finally clear.
