Plot twist

PART 2: THE PAPER TRAIL OF VENGEANCE

The drive home was quiet.

The chaos of the wedding was already circulating on every social media platform.

My phone hadn't stopped buzzing since we left the ballroom.

Ava was asleep in the backseat, her small hand clutching the USB drive.

I looked at the rearview mirror and saw a black SUV following us.

I sped up.

The SUV sped up.

"Mommy?" Ava stirred, her voice groggy.

"Are they coming to get us?"

"No, honey," I lied, my hands shaking on the steering wheel.

"Everything is going to be fine."

I took a sharp turn into an alleyway, hoping to lose them in the dark streets of Chicago.

The SUV didn't follow.

It pulled up alongside my car and stopped.

A man stepped out.

It was Robert Hale, Ethan’s father.

He looked at me through the window, his expression unreadable.

"Get out of the car, Claire," he said.

I hesitated, but I knew I couldn't outrun him.

I stepped out, keeping Ava behind me.

"If you're here to ask for the drive," I said, "the answer is no."

Robert sighed, a sound of profound exhaustion.

"I don't want the drive, Claire."

"I want the people who stole from my company punished."

"Your mother and sister have been siphoning millions from me for years."

"I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't find the source."

"Your daughter found what my entire security team missed."

He reached into his coat pocket and handed me a thick envelope.

"This is protection," he said.

"Not just for you, but for the company."

"If they are going down, they will try to take everyone with them."

"Your mother has friends in places you can't imagine."

"They will come for that drive."

I opened the envelope.

It contained a passport, a new identity, and the keys to a safe house in the city.

"Why help me now?" I asked.

"Because you’re the only one who didn't lie to me," he replied.

"The Hales are a family of vipers, but you... you are the only one who actually worked for what you have."

He turned and walked back to his car.

I stood there in the cold, feeling the weight of the new life he had offered.

But as I looked at the envelope, I realized it wasn't a gift.

It was a distraction.

I noticed a small tracking device taped to the back of the envelope.

He wasn't protecting me.

He was using me as bait to find out where my mother had hidden the rest of the embezzled money.

My mind raced.

If Robert knew, then he was just as guilty.

He wanted to find the money before the police did.

I looked at Ava.

She was still holding the drive.

"Ava," I said, "can you copy the files to the cloud?"

"I already did, Mommy," she said, tapping her tablet.

"The police have it, and so does the news."

I smiled.

My daughter was the smartest person in the room.

We weren't bait.

We were the hunters.

I dropped the tracking device in the trash and started the car.

We weren't going to a safe house.

We were going to the one place my mother never thought I’d look: the family vacation home in Wisconsin.

She had hidden the real ledger there.

I knew, because I had spent my childhood cleaning that house, moving every box, every rug, and every piece of furniture she ever touched.

I knew her secrets better than she knew herself.

The road ahead was dark, but for the first time, I could see the destination.

We were going to finish what we started.
