Plot twist

PART 3: THE FINAL AUDIT

The Wisconsin house was blanketed in snow.

It looked exactly as I remembered it.

Cold, silent, and filled with memories of forced labor.

We parked the car behind a row of pine trees and crept toward the back porch.

I picked the lock with the same tool my father had taught me to use when we were kids.

The door creaked open.

I motioned for Ava to stay behind me.

We moved through the house in the dark.

The living room was exactly as I had left it ten years ago.

I walked to the fireplace.

There was a loose stone behind the mantle, one that didn't match the grout of the others.

I pried it open.

Behind it was a small metal box.

I pulled it out and opened the lid.

Inside were bank statements, deeds to offshore properties, and a handwritten list of names.

Names of judges, senators, and business rivals.

My mother had been running a blackmail ring for two decades.

"Is that it?" Ava whispered.

"This is it," I said.

Suddenly, the front door burst open.

Lights flooded the room, blinding us.

It was my mother.

She had been released on bail within hours, and she had clearly gone straight here.

"I knew you'd come here, you little rat," she spat.

She was holding a gun, her hand shaking with rage.

"Give me the box, Claire."

"You're going to give me that box, and you're going to walk into the woods and never come back."

"Or I’ll finish what I should have done the day you were born."

I didn't move.

"You really think you're going to get away with this?" I asked.

"You’re already ruined."

"The money is gone."

"The ledgers are exposed."

"You have nothing left."

She stepped closer, the barrel of the gun pressed against my forehead.

"I have you," she hissed.

"And I have that brat."

Ava didn't scream.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out her tablet.

She tapped the screen, and a voice filled the room.

It was the voice of the Lead Detective from the police department.

"We have the house surrounded, Martha," the voice said.

"Put the gun down and step away from the child."

My mother froze.

She spun around, looking for the officers, but there was no one there.

"It's a recording, Grandma," Ava said.

"I edited it myself."

My mother’s face twisted in fury.

She cocked the gun.

But she wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was looking at the shadows behind me.

Two officers emerged from the kitchen, their weapons drawn.

"Drop it!" they yelled.

This time, it wasn't a recording.

My mother’s gun clattered to the floor.

She fell to her knees, sobbing.

"I did everything for this family," she cried.

"I kept us safe."

"You didn't keep us safe," I said, stepping over the gun.

"You just kept us quiet."

The officers handcuffed her and led her away.

She didn't look back.

The house was empty again.

I walked to the porch and looked out at the trees.

The sun was beginning to rise over the horizon.

Ava walked up beside me and held my hand.

"Are we done now, Mommy?"

I looked at the box of secrets in my hand.

I looked at the girl who had taken down an empire with a pink tablet.

"No, Ava," I said.

"We’re just getting started."

We turned around and walked out of the house for the last time.

The future was ours to build, and for once, there were no secrets left to hide.

The truth had finally set us free.
