Part 2: The Unmasking

Part 2: The Unmasking
I stood up.
Straight, tall, and completely uninjured.
The heavy gray blanket pooled at my feet like a discarded snake skin. I adjusted the cuffs of my navy blue suit jacket, looking down at my fiancée, whose face had gone completely pale.
"You... you can walk?" Vanessa stammered, taking a panicked step backward. Her high heels tripped on her own gown.
"I can do much more than walk, Vanessa," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings.
The whispers in the room exploded like a sudden wildfire. My uncle Martin dropped his champagne glass. My "best friend" Daniel looked around frantically for an exit.
"What is the meaning of this, Leo?!" my uncle Martin yelled, trying to regain his dominant posture. "You lied to your own family? You made us mourn for you?"
"I needed to see who would mourn," I replied, stepping out of the circle of the wheelchair. "And who would start dividing my assets before my body was even cold."
I turned my back on Vanessa and looked directly at the crowd of high-society vultures.
"Three weeks ago, my brakes failed on the Coyoacán highway," I announced, walking slowly toward the center stage of the ballroom. "The police told the media it was a mechanical error. But my private security team found something else."
I pulled a small, sleek black remote control from my pocket and pressed the button.
The grand projector screen behind the ballroom orchestra lit up.
It didn't show a slideshow of my recovery. It showed a high-definition security video from the mansion's private garage, dated the night before my accident.
The camera clearly captured a man in a dark hoodie cutting the brake lines of my sports car.
When the man turned around to wipe his hands, the hood fell back.
It was Daniel. My best friend. My business partner.
The ballroom erupted into chaotic shouting. Daniel turned to run toward the grand terrace doors, but two heavily armed security guards blocked his path, their hands resting on their holsters.
"You think I didn't know about the secret offshore account you opened last month, Daniel?" I asked, my voice deadly calm. "Or the fact that you promised my uncle Martin 30% of my tech shares once I was out of the picture?"
Uncle Martin’s face turned from pale to an ugly shade of purple. "This is slander! You have no proof that I had anything to do with this!"
"I don't need to prove it to the media, Uncle," I smiled coldly. "The FBI is already waiting in my study downstairs. They have the complete digital trail."
I turned back to Vanessa, who was now trembling, clutching her mother’s arm. Her arrogant expression was entirely gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated terror.
"And you," I said, walking up to her until I could see the sweat breaking out on her forehead. "You thought you were marrying a powerful billionaire. You were right. But you are no longer the bride."
"Leo, baby, please," Vanessa begged, her voice cracking as she tried to reach for my hand. "I was just stressed! The accident... it broke my heart, I didn't know what I was saying! I love you!"
May you like
"You love my empire," I corrected her, stepping out of her reach. "But there's one more video you should see."
I clicked the remote control a second time.
