Part 2 – The Man Who Claimed the Twins

Part 2 – The Man Who Claimed the Twins
The call came through Detective Sarah Mitchell's radio just as she was examining the fresh tire tracks outside the cabin.
"A man is at the hospital," the dispatcher repeated. "He says the newborn twins are his sons. He's demanding to take all three children home immediately."
Sarah's eyes narrowed.
"What's his name?"
A brief pause.
"He identifies himself as Ethan Walker."
Sarah looked back toward the small cabin.
The woman inside had written one sentence over and over in her notebook.
Don't let them find us.
Not him.
Them.
That single word changed everything.
"Keep him there," Sarah ordered. "No one releases those children until I arrive."
Two hours earlier...
Ethan Walker had walked into the pediatric intensive care unit wearing an expensive navy suit that looked completely out of place in the emergency department.
He appeared calm.
Well groomed.
Successful.
Nothing about him suggested danger.
"I understand my sons were brought here this morning," he told the receptionist politely.
"My name is Ethan Walker."
"I've been searching for them for years."
The receptionist immediately contacted hospital security.
Within minutes, Ethan was escorted into a consultation room.
Dr. Michael Grant entered carrying the twins' preliminary charts.
"You claim to be their father?"
Ethan nodded.
"Yes."
"And the little girl?"
"My daughter."
Dr. Grant watched him carefully.
"You have any identification?"
Ethan quietly placed several documents on the table.
Birth certificates.
Photographs.
A family picture showing Ethan holding a smiling pregnant woman.
Everything appeared genuine.
Almost too genuine.
Meanwhile, Lily sat wrapped in a hospital blanket coloring quietly with donated crayons.
A child psychologist gently sat beside her.
"Lily..."
She smiled.
"Do you know a man named Ethan?"
The little girl immediately stopped coloring.
The blue crayon rolled across the table.
Her breathing became shallow.
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
The psychologist noticed something unusual.
Lily wasn't confused.
She was afraid.
Detective Sarah returned to the hospital shortly before sunset.
She entered the consultation room without knocking.
Ethan stood politely.
"Detective."
Sarah sat across from him.
"You've had quite a day."
"I imagine you have too."
"You say those children are yours."
"They are."
"Then tell me something."
"When were the twins born?"
"Nine days ago."
"Names?"
"Jacob and Noah."
Sarah never looked down at her notebook.
Interesting.
Those names matched hospital records.
Either he truly knew the children...
Or someone had given him detailed information.
"What happened to their mother?" Sarah asked.
A shadow crossed Ethan's face.
"She disappeared seven years ago."
Sarah frowned.
"Seven years?"
"Yes."
"Yet the twins are only nine days old."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"I found her again last year."
"We were trying to rebuild our family."
"And then she vanished."
His story sounded believable.
Almost.
But Sarah had spent fifteen years interviewing liars.
There was always one detail that didn't fit.
She leaned forward.
"If you loved her..."
"Why was she hiding under another name in a cabin with no electricity?"
Ethan hesitated.
Only for a second.
"I don't know."
There it was.
The pause.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But real.
Back at the crime scene...
Forensic investigators finished processing the cabin.
One officer carried a sealed evidence bag toward Sarah.
"We found this under a loose floorboard."
Inside was an old metal cash box.
No money.
Just photographs.
Dozens of them.
Lily as a toddler.
A pregnant Anna.
The newborn twins.
Then...
Several pictures of Ethan.
Taken secretly from a distance.
Outside office buildings.
Parking lots.
Restaurants.
Someone had been watching him.
Sarah opened another envelope.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
Billionaire Investor Ethan Walker Announces Engagement
The date stunned her.
Three years ago.
According to Ethan...
He had been desperately searching for Anna during that same period.
Yet publicly...
He had been preparing to marry another woman.
Sarah requested Ethan's phone records.
His financial records.
Travel history.
Everything.
Within an hour, another surprise emerged.
He had indeed hired private investigators.
Not one.
Eight.
He had spent nearly four million dollars searching for someone.
Anna.
That supported his story.
Then another investigator rushed into Sarah's office.
"You need to hear this."
He placed an audio recording on the desk.
A voicemail recovered from Anna's old prepaid phone.
Sarah pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost gentle.
"Anna... please stop running."
"You're making this harder than it has to be."
"You know Lily belongs with me."
"Call me before someone gets hurt."
The recording ended.
Sarah looked up.
"That's Ethan."
The technician nodded.
"Voice analysis confirms it."
"But here's the strange part."
He opened another file.
"The voicemail is six years old."
Six years.
Long before the twins.
Long before the engagement.
Long before Ethan claimed they were rebuilding their family.
He had lied.
That evening, Sarah visited Lily again.
The little girl sat watching through the nursery window where her brothers slept inside incubators.
"They're warm now," Lily whispered.
"Yes."
"They'll be okay?"
"We think so."
Sarah knelt beside her.
"Lily..."
She held up Ethan's photograph.
"Have you ever seen this man?"
Lily looked once.
Her tiny face lost all color.
She immediately stepped backward.
The blanket slipped from her shoulders.
Sarah didn't speak.
She waited.
Finally...
Lily whispered four words.
"He wears different names."
Sarah felt a chill run down her spine.
"What do you mean?"
"My mommy said..."
Lily's voice trembled.
"...if he ever finds us..."
She looked toward the hospital entrance.
"...never tell him who I really am."
Sarah's heartbeat quickened.
"What is your real name, Lily?"
The little girl lowered her head.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered something so quietly Sarah almost missed it.
"My name isn't Lily."
Sarah froze.
"What did you say?"
The child slowly looked up.
"My mommy only called me Lily..."
"...when we were hiding."
At that exact moment, alarms suddenly echoed through the neonatal intensive care unit.
Nurses began shouting.
Doctors ran toward the twins' room.
One terrified nurse screamed,
"Someone just disconnected Baby Two's monitor!"
Sarah spun toward the nursery.
The incubator was open.
May you like
One newborn was gone.
