Part 3 – The Name She Was Never Allowed to Say

The neonatal intensive care unit erupted into chaos.

Doctors rushed between incubators.

Nurses searched every hallway.

Security alarms echoed throughout the hospital.

Every exit automatically locked.

Detective Sarah Mitchell pushed through the crowd.

"Which baby?"

A trembling nurse pointed toward the empty incubator.

"Baby Two."

"The monitor went offline less than thirty seconds ago."

Sarah looked around.

No broken windows.

No signs of forced entry.

Someone had known exactly where to go.

And exactly how much time they had.

Hospital security immediately pulled surveillance footage.

Every camera surrounding the NICU appeared on a wall of monitors.

"There," one technician said.

A nurse wearing full protective equipment entered the unit carrying medical supplies.

Nothing unusual.

Thirty seconds later...

The same nurse left.

Only now she was pushing a bassinet covered with a hospital blanket.

Nobody stopped her.

Nobody questioned her.

She walked confidently through three security checkpoints.

Then disappeared into an employee elevator.

Sarah leaned closer.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

The nurse's ID badge was visible.

But something was wrong.

The hospital logo was upside down.

A fake badge.

The kidnapper had counted on no one looking that closely.

Meanwhile, Ethan Walker sat calmly in the consultation room.

Almost too calmly.

An officer entered.

"The hospital is in lockdown."

Ethan stood immediately.

"What happened?"

"One of the twins has been taken."

For the first time all day...

Real panic crossed Ethan's face.

"What?"

He rushed toward the hallway.

"I have to help."

Two officers blocked his path.

"I'm sorry."

"You're not leaving."

"I didn't take my son!"

Sarah entered the room.

"No."

"But someone knew exactly where your children were."

She watched his reaction carefully.

Fear.

Confusion.

Anger.

None of it looked rehearsed.

Either he was an exceptional actor...

Or he truly hadn't expected this.

Lily sat wrapped in a blanket beside Dr. Grant.

She hadn't spoken since the alarm.

Her eyes remained fixed on the empty incubator.

Then she whispered,

"They found us."

Sarah immediately knelt beside her.

"Who found you?"

Lily looked toward the floor.

"The people Mommy was hiding from."

"Who are they?"

"My mommy never told me."

"Why?"

"She said if I knew..."

"...I might accidentally tell someone."

Sarah gently took the little girl's hand.

"What did your mommy call you before you became Lily?"

The child hesitated.

Then quietly answered,

"Grace."

Sarah wrote it down.

"Grace what?"

The little girl slowly shook her head.

"I don't remember."

"My mommy said forgetting was safer."

Back at the cabin...

Crime scene investigators uncovered another hidden compartment beneath the fireplace.

Inside was a waterproof backpack.

It contained children's drawings.

Baby photographs.

Medical records.

And a small voice recorder.

Sarah pressed play.

A weak female voice filled the room.

"Grace..."

"If you're listening to this..."

"...something happened to me."

The recording paused as the woman struggled to breathe.

"My real name..."

"...isn't Anna Miller."

"My name is..."

Static interrupted the recording.

Several seconds of silence followed.

Then another sentence.

"They work for..."

More static.

The tape had been damaged by moisture.

Only fragments remained.

"...trust no one..."

"...especially..."

The recording ended.

Sarah clenched her jaw.

The most important information had been destroyed.

Forensic analysts continued examining the backpack.

One investigator held up a folded birth certificate.

"Detective."

Sarah looked over.

"The twins weren't born at home."

"What?"

"They were delivered in a private hospital."

She checked the document.

The hospital's name had been blacked out.

Every identifying detail had been carefully removed.

Except one.

The attending physician.

Dr. Leonard Cross.

Sarah immediately ordered a background search.

Within minutes...

The result appeared.

Dr. Cross had disappeared eight days earlier.

The same day the twins were born.

Across town...

A black SUV rolled quietly into an abandoned warehouse district.

Inside the vehicle, the fake nurse carefully lifted the stolen newborn from the bassinet.

The baby stirred weakly.

A man waiting inside the warehouse looked down.

"So..."

"You finally brought him."

The fake nurse removed the medical mask.

She wasn't hospital staff.

She was a woman in her early forties with short black hair.

"One twin."

"The other stayed behind."

The man frowned.

"I wanted both."

"There wasn't enough time."

He stared at the newborn for several seconds.

Then smiled.

"One is enough."

Back at the hospital...

Sarah received another unexpected surprise.

DNA results.

Because Ethan had claimed paternity, the hospital laboratory had rushed preliminary testing.

The technician looked confused.

"Detective..."

"The results don't make sense."

Sarah took the report.

"What do you mean?"

"Ethan Walker..."

"...isn't the biological father."

Silence.

"Are you certain?"

"We repeated the test twice."

"No biological relationship."

Sarah looked toward the consultation room where Ethan sat surrounded by officers.

He had lied.

Again.

But why?

She walked inside carrying the report.

"Ethan."

He looked up.

"The DNA says you aren't their father."

He stared at the paper.

Then quietly closed his eyes.

"I know."

Sarah froze.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why pretend?"

Ethan took a long breath.

"Because if the people hunting those children discover they have no father..."

"...they'll never stop looking."

Sarah frowned.

"Who are they?"

He slowly met her eyes.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

"The children aren't hiding from one man."

"They're hiding from an organization."

Before Sarah could respond...

The lights throughout the hospital suddenly flickered.

Emergency generators activated.

Every computer screen went black.

Nurses shouted from the hallway.

The hospital's entire network had been hacked.

Seconds later...

Every monitor in the emergency department displayed the same message in bright red letters.

RETURN THE CHILDREN.

THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

One sentence.

One name.

The name Grace's mother had tried to say before the recording was destroyed.

WE KNOW WHO ELEANOR THORNE REALLY IS.

Grace stared at the screen.

Her face turned completely white.

She whispered the words her mother had forbidden her to ever say.

May you like

"...That's my mommy's real name."
