Part 2: The House of Glass

The name Grandpa Richard didn't just echo in the small bedroom; it shattered my entire world. Richard Vance was not only my father; he was a revered retired federal judge, a prominent pillar of our community, and the undisputed patriarch of our family. He was the man everyone turned to for justice, the man whose shadow I had lived under my entire life.

"Harrison? Chloe? The car is packed, we need to leave!" Meredith's voice called out again from the foyer, her footsteps suddenly echoing on the hardwood stairs.

"Chloe, stay here. Lock the door behind me and don't open it for anyone but me," I commanded in a low, fierce whisper, wiping the tears from my face as I stood up.

I slipped out of her room, pulling the door closed just as Meredith reached the top of the landing. She looked radiant, holding a bouquet of pink roses meant for Chloe's post-performance celebration. But when she saw my face, her smile instantly vanished.

"Harrison? What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost," she said, her brow furrowing as she reached out to touch my arm.

"We aren't going to the recital, Meredith," I said, my voice dead and cold.

"What do you mean we aren't going? Chloe has been practicing for six months! Her grandparents are already waiting for us at the auditorium!"

"Your father did it," I said, looking her dead in the eye.

Meredith blinked, confused. "What are you talking about? Did what?"

I didn't say another word. I grabbed her wrist gently and pulled her into Chloe's room, closing and locking the door behind us. Chloe stood exactly where I left her, her small frame shaking. I nodded to my daughter, and Chloe slowly turned around, showing her mother the horrific, purple handprints marking her back.

Meredith let out a muffled shriek, the bouquet of roses slipping from her hands and scattering across the floor. She dropped to her knees, weeping as she reached out to touch the bruises, but Chloe flinched away, burying her face in her hands.

"No... no, my father would never," Meredith whispered frantically, her voice filled with a desperate, defensive denial. "He loves her! It must have been an accident at school, or maybe—"

"Meredith, look at those marks!" I roared, the anger I had been suppressing finally breaking through. "Those are the handprints of an adult man. He’s been doing this since February. While we were letting him babysit so we could go to our corporate dinners. Your father is a monster, and he has been hiding behind his judge’s robes while torturing our daughter."

Meredith stared at the bruises, the horrific reality finally piercing through her denial. Her father, the man she idolized, was a predator in plain sight. Before she could speak, my phone rang. The caller ID displayed a picture of Richard Vance, calling from the recital hall.

I answered it, putting it on speakerphone.

"Harrison, where are you three?" my father's booming, authoritative voice echoed into the room. "The judges are taking their seats. The Vance family has a front-row table reserved. Do not embarrass me by being late."

"We're not coming, Dad," I said, my voice steady and deadly calm. "We're heading somewhere else instead."
