Part 3: The Threat from the Bench

The air inside Richard Vance’s private study smelled of expensive leather, aged scotch, and old mahogany. Two hours after the text message, I stood in the center of the room, staring at my father. He sat behind his massive oak desk, looking pristine in a tailored navy suit, completely unbothered by my sudden arrival.

"You skipped your daughter’s recital to come to my house and make baseless accusations, Harrison?" Richard said, chuckling softly as he poured himself a glass of whiskey. "You’ve always been prone to dramatic outbursts. It's why you never succeeded in the law firm."

"I have the medical reports, Dad," I slammed a thick folder onto the oak desk, directly over his gold-plated nameplate. "The pediatric clinic confirmed it. Deep tissue bruising matching the physical dimensions of an adult male hand. They're filing a mandatory report with Child Protective Services as we speak."

My father’s smile slowly faded, his grey eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits. He didn't deny it. He didn't even look at the folder. He simply leaned back in his leather chair, tapping his fingers rhythmically against the armrest.

"Do you know what happens if you take this public, Harrison?" Richard asked, his voice dropping to a low, intimidating purr that had terrified criminals in courtrooms for decades. "I built this city’s judicial circuit. The District Attorney owes his career to my endorsements. The chief of police is a personal friend. If you file a report, it will disappear before it ever reaches a clerk's desk."

"I don't care about your friends, Richard," I hissed, leaning over the desk until I was inches from his face. "I will take it to the state level. I will take it to the press. I will shout it from the rooftops until everyone knows what you are."

"And I will have you declared an unfit father," Richard countered smoothly, his expression completely devoid of remorse. "I will use Meredith's family trust to tie you up in court battles until you are completely bankrupt. I will tell the judge you are suffering from a psychological breakdown and that you inflicted those injuries yourself to frame me. Who do you think the court will believe? A disgraced construction manager, or a retired federal judge?"

The sheer, calculated evil of his threat made my blood run cold. He was willing to destroy his own son to protect his legacy.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study swung open. Meredith stepped into the room, her eyes red from crying, but her posture rigid and unyielding. In her hand, she held a small, black recording device.

"They'll believe me, Dad," Meredith said, her voice shaking but filled with a terrifying resolve. "Because I just spent the last ten minutes broadcasting this entire conversation over a live digital stream to our family's public foundation webpage. Thousands of your colleagues just heard you threaten to frame your own son to cover up what you did to your granddaughter."
