PART 2: THE SOUTH CAROLINA EXILE

PART 2: THE SOUTH CAROLINA EXILE

The morning sun over Hilton Head was brilliant, casting a blinding gold glow over the wrap-around deck of the luxury rental villa.

Bryce Callahan lounged back on a white outdoor sofa, a cold drink in his hand, laughing as his mother, Eleanor, reviewed a printout of an interior design catalog. His younger sister, Chloe, sat nearby, scrolling lazily through her tablet.

"You did the right thing, Bryce," Eleanor said, smoothing down her designer linen shirt with an arrogant, satisfied smile. "Paige has been holding that property over your head since the engagement. A week at a hotel will make her realize that a marriage requires sharing assets, not gatekeeping them."

"I just wanted to set a clear boundary," Bryce shrugged, his smooth, polished voice entirely devoid of remorse. "She gets entirely too emotional. I even tried to log into the thermostat app this morning to turn down the HVAC while she's away, but the master connection timed out."

"It probably just needs a reset," Chloe muttered without looking up. "Hey, Bryce... why did the family corporate credit card just get flagged for an unauthorized overdraft?"

Bryce sat up, his brow furrowing as he pulled out his phone. "That's impossible. The company account handles the villa rental. It has a fifty-thousand-dollar rolling balance."

He opened his banking dashboard. The screen didn't show a balance; it showed a massive, flashing red restriction banner: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED BY LEGAL INDICTMENT DECREE.

Before Bryce could even process the text, the glass doors of the deck were shoved open by the villa’s resort manager, accompanied by two local sheriff's deputies.

"Mr. Bryce Callahan?" the manager asked, his voice completely stripped of hospitality. "We've received an electronic notification from the state capital's financial crimes unit. The authorization for this rental has been flagged as fraudulent corporate dissipation."

Eleanor stood up so fast her diamond necklace rattled. "What is the meaning of this? My son is an executive! We are paying guests!"

"Not anymore, ma'am," the deputy said calmly, his hand resting on his utility belt. "The primary corporate trust filer, a Ms. Paige Larkin, has just filed an emergency asset seizure and an eviction protection order. You have exactly fifteen minutes to clear this villa before you are detained for illegal trespass."
