Chapter 5 - The Cold Audit

By Wednesday afternoon, the financial foundation Ryan had built his arrogant life upon was systematically dismantled.
Inside Arthur Vance’s private office suite, I sat at a wide glass desk wearing a dark wool dress, holding a cup of hot tea while Arthur presented the secondary financial disclosures.
"When Ryan married you five years ago, Emma," Arthur explained, sliding a stack of ledger sheets across the table, "he convinced you to sign a joint secondary liability agreement for his boutique real estate firm."
I nodded, remembering how he had handed me pages of dense legal paperwork while I was recovering from flu fever three years ago, telling me it was "just routine spousal insurance."
"What he didn't tell you," Arthur continued with a sharp smile, "was that the primary seed capital for his Aspen cabin leases and his luxury car accounts was drawn from a secondary trust established under your late grandfather’s estate."
"My grandfather’s trust?" I asked in shock.
"Your grandfather left a four-hundred-thousand-dollar emergency health and family trust under your maiden name," Arthur revealed. "Ryan has been illegally withdrawing funds from that trust for three years by forging your electronic signature."
"He didn't just abandon you on Friday, Emma. He was using your inheritance money to pay for his Aspen birthday trip."
Tears of anger burned in my eyes, but I didn't cry. I wiped my face and looked straight into Arthur’s eyes.
"Execute the full audit, Mr. Vance," I commanded flatly. "Every cent."

"Already done," Arthur smiled. "The bank has frozen all joint accounts, repossessed his sports car, and issued a full demand for immediate trust restitution within seventy-two hours."
"Without his job at the brokerage, Ryan is officially insolvent."
