Chapter 6 - The Eviction at Dawn

At 8:00 AM on Friday morning—exactly one week after Ryan had walked out on me—a large commercial moving van was parked outside our suburban home.

Ryan sat on the front porch steps, wearing an unpressed sweater, holding a paper cup of cold coffee.

His mother, Evelyn Parker, stood beside him, her expensive pearl necklace looking ridiculous against her furious, red face.

"This is an outrage!" Evelyn shrieked as workers carried boxed furniture out the front door. "Emma has no right to throw my son out of his own house! This property belongs to the Parker family!"

Clara walked down the driveway, holding a certified court order signed by the district judge.

"The house was purchased using Emma’s grandfather’s trust as primary equity, Evelyn," Clara said coolly, handing her the eviction notice. "Under the emergency asset protection order, Ryan has two hours to clear his personal belongings."

Ryan stood up, his face hollow, his eyes sunken, looking like a man who hadn't slept in a week.

He saw my black SUV pull into the driveway.

I stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a tailored cream blazer, holding Ethan safely against my chest in a soft leather carrier. I looked healthy, strong, and completely at peace.

"Emma..." Ryan choked out, taking a desperate step toward me before Clara stepped between us.

"Emma, please!" Ryan sobbed, dropping to his knees on the wet grass. "I was wrong! I was arrogant! I’ll go to therapy! I’ll sell the watch! Just let me see my son! Let me come home!"

I looked down at the man who had told me to "crawl to the medicine cabinet" while I was bleeding on the floor.

"You had a home, Ryan," I said softly, my voice carrying zero anger, zero bitterness, and zero weakness.

"You had a wife who loved you, and a son who needed you."

"But you chose a twelve-thousand-dollar watch, a glass of whiskey, and three days of applause in Aspen."

"Enjoy your birthday gift, Ryan. It's the last thing you'll ever get from us."

I turned my back on him, walking into the house with my sister and my son, as the moving crew closed the heavy truck doors behind us.
