Chapter 4 - THE EXECUTIVE BOARDROOM

The silence inside the twelfth-floor boardroom was absolute.

Around the massive, custom-built walnut conference table sat nine members of the board of directors—wealthy, powerful men and women who held the financial pulse of the entire region.

At the head of the table stood Grant.

He was wearing his charcoal custom suit, his silver tie immaculate, looking every bit the confident, visionary leader preparing to assume the mantle of CEO. On the projected screen behind him, a sleek presentation slide bore the bold header: Holloway Clinical Distribution: The Future Under Grant Holloway.

He was in the middle of a sentence when the heavy doors swung open with a sharp, echoing bang.

Every head in the room whipped around.

Grant stopped talking mid-word. His mouth remained slightly open, his eyes locking onto me as if he were staring at a ghost rising from a grave.

“Evelyn?” Grant whispered, the word slipping out before he could filter it. “What... what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be in Miami.”

I walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, my boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. I didn't look like a hysterical wife. I looked like an auditor executing a hostile takeover of a narrative.

“Plans changed, Grant,” I said, my voice carrying clearly to every corner of the room. “It turns out freezing in a coach car on the way to Virginia gives a person a lot of time to think about corporate governance.”

Color drained rapidly from Grant’s face. He glanced desperately toward the doorway, seeing his two security guards lingering sheepishly in the hall, entirely unable to stop me.

“Evelyn, this is an executive session,” Grant recovered quickly, forcing a tight, patronizing smile as he addressed the board. “My wife is clearly exhausted—she’s experiencing severe prenatal fatigue—and she’s confused about the meeting schedule. Security, please escort her down to the executive lounge—”

“Sit down, Grant,” I snapped.

The command was so sharp, so completely unexpected from the quiet wife who had spent seven years nodding politely at his dinner parties, that Grant actually stumbled backward against his chair.

Several board members gasped.

Arthur Sterling, the senior independent board director, adjusted his glasses and leaned forward. “Mrs. Holloway, what is the meaning of this interruption? Mr. Grant presented us with an emergency management certification signed by your own administrative profile, stating that internal audit fully clears his interim appointment.”

“A certification,” I said, stopping at the edge of the conference table and dropping my leather messenger bag onto the polished wood with a heavy thud, “that was forged using my admin credentials while I was forcibly stranded on a train without my consent.”

Grant’s face turned the color of ash. “That is a complete fabrication! She’s unstable—her doctor ordered her on bed rest—!”

“My doctor ordered nothing of the kind,” I interrupted, unzipping the accordion folder and pulling out the stack of financial documents. “And as for my stability, I suggest you all turn your attention to the tablets in front of you.”

With three quick taps on my phone, I beamed the emergency audit exception report directly to the boardroom’s central presentation server.

The screen behind Grant flickered, replacing his self-congratulatory corporate presentation with a glaring, unvarnished financial ledger.
