Chapter 5 - THE NINE MILLION DOLLARS

“Quiet! Everyone, please, quiet!”

Arthur Sterling banged his heavy silver pen against the walnut table, cutting through the rising tide of shouted questions and stunned murmurs.

On the screen behind Grant, the wire transfer receipts were displayed in agonizing detail—dates, bank routing numbers, receiving accounts, and the corporate name that tied the entire conspiracy together.

Blue Ridge Emergency Logistics.

Grant stood frozen at the head of the table, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany surface so tightly his knuckles were stark white. All the polished, corporate charm had evaporated, leaving behind a cornered man realizing the trap he had laid had just snapped shut around his own neck.

“This... this is an unauthorized document,” Grant stammered, his voice cracking slightly. “She hacked into legacy files—she’s trying to sabotage my transition because of personal marital grievances—!”

“Marital grievances?” Arthur Sterling turned his stern, piercing gaze from the screen onto Grant. “Mr. Holloway, the document on this screen shows nearly nine and a half million dollars wired to a logistics shell company registered out of a UPS store in Roanoke. A company whose sole managing partner is your sister, Marissa Holloway.”

The boardroom fell dead silent. Every eye in the room pivoted from Grant back to the screen.

“Is that correct, Mrs. Holloway?” Arthur asked, looking directly at me.

“Every word of it, Mr. Sterling,” I said, standing tall and proud at the edge of the table. “For the past seven months, while management claimed regional supply chains were experiencing inflationary pressures, capital was systematically siphoned out of our operational accounts and funneled into private accounts controlled by Marissa—and approved via exception waivers signed personally by the Chief Financial Officer.”

I turned my head slowly, locking eyes with my husband.

“Approved by my husband.”

Grant’s chest heaved. He tried to speak, but no words came out. He looked around the table, desperately searching for a sympathetic ally among the directors, but found only cold, unforgiving stares. These weren't just board members anymore; they were investors whose money had just been stolen.

“Where is Marissa right now?” Director Sterling demanded, his voice dropping dangerously low. “And where are the funds?”

“Marissa is currently vacationing in Miami, sleeping in a sleeper car I paid for, using money she didn't earn,” I replied clearly. “And as for the funds, the digital paper trail is already mirrored on secure cloud servers outside this company’s network. If Grant’s office attempts to wipe the local drives, federal investigators will still have the complete ledger within five minutes.”

Grant snapped.

The thin veneer of corporate composure vanished entirely. He lunged across the table toward me, his face twisted in primal rage.

“You ruined everything!” Grant roared, his hands clawing toward my shoulders. “You ungrateful little—!”

Before he could take two steps, the boardroom doors flew open behind him.

Two armed federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers, accompanied by Rebecca Sloan and two local police officers, swarmed into the room.

The federal agents didn't hesitate. They intercepted Grant mid-stride, grabbing his arms and violently forcing him down against the mahogany conference table, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing click.

“Grant Holloway,” the lead federal investigator announced, pulling a badge from his pocket. “You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy against interstate commerce.”
