Plot twist

Chapter 8 - THE DEBT HARPER’S FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Victor DeLuca agreed to meet Damian.

Public.

Restaurant closed for afternoon.

Lawyers present.

No weapons.

No theatrical army.

Harper did not attend.

She had enough.

Until Victor sent her flowers.

White lilies.

No threat.

Card:

Ask Damian what Thomas Bennett did for Vincent Vale.

Harper stared.

Her father.

Thomas Bennett died eight years earlier from a heart attack.

Accountant.

Quiet.

He had owned a small bookkeeping firm.

Never wealthy.

Never mentioned Vale.

Harper called Damian.

“What did my father do for yours?”

Silence.

Wrong answer.

“Damian.”

“I don’t know.”

“Do not protect me with ignorance.”

“I genuinely don’t know.”

“Victor does.”

“I’m meeting him.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

Harper hung up.

Ten minutes later Damian called back.

“Fine.”

She smiled.

Progress.

Victor DeLuca was sixty-four.

Immaculate.

He looked more like a senator than criminal legend.

When Harper entered with her own attorney—she hired one now, Patricia Nguyen—Victor smiled.

“Thomas’s daughter.”

Harper sat.

“What did you know about my father?”

Victor looked at Damian.

“Your father’s clean books came from Thomas Bennett.”

Damian froze.

“What?”

Victor continued.

“Vincent Vale used Bennett Accounting Services for five years.”

Harper shook head.

“My father had neighborhood clients.”

“He had one very large quiet client.”

“Why wouldn’t I know?”

“Because Thomas hated it.”

Victor leaned back.

“Your father discovered Vincent’s hidden debt to Antonio DeLuca.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“Kept copies.”

Harper’s stomach tightened.

“Where?”

Victor smiled.

“That’s why Adrian threatened you.”

Harper stared.

“He thinks I have something.”

“He thinks Thomas left you records.”

“I inherited tax boxes and unpaid invoices.”

“Did you look at all?”

“No.”

Victor looked at Damian.

“There.”

“What?”

“Adrian has been searching for Bennett archive for months.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

The threat was not only kiss.

Harper had already mattered to Adrian.

The kiss simply accelerated.

Victor continued.

“Thomas came to my father after Vincent died.”

Sebastian said Antonio knew debt.

This connected.

“Thomas believed Vincent’s death wasn’t accident.”

Harper looked at Damian.

“Did he accuse Sebastian?”

“No.”

Victor answered.

“He suspected Antonio.”

Damian became still.

“My uncle killed him accidentally.”

Victor’s face changed.

“You know.”

“Yes.”

Victor looked almost relieved.

Then:

“My father blackmailed Sebastian afterward.”

There.

“He knew Sebastian lied.”

“How?”

“Thomas told him Vincent planned to surrender Pier Twelve. Then Vincent died before signing. Antonio realized someone stopped deal.”

Damian stared.

“Thomas gave Antonio evidence?”

“No. Thomas came asking what happened. Antonio understood enough.”

Harper’s hands went cold.

“My father went to a DeLuca?”

“He wanted truth.”

That sounded like him.

Quiet did not mean cowardly.

“What happened to records?”

“Thomas hid them.”

“Where?”

Victor shook head.

“Never told.”

“Then why does Adrian think I have them?”

“Because your father left business to you.”

Harper laughed.

“He left me debt.”

“And storage unit?”

Her body went still.

“What?”

Victor watched.

Harper’s father had rented a storage unit in South Philadelphia.

After death, Harper paid one year then forgot? Could have been auto-paid through estate account. She remembered old brass key in box labeled BSA.

Bennett Storage Archive?

She had assumed office furniture.

“Where?”

Damian asked.

Harper looked at him.

“I know.”

Victor smiled.

“Then Adrian will too.”

Damian stood.

“We’re done.”

Victor remained seated.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“I did not send photograph.”

Damian turned.

“Adrian did?”

“Yes.”

“Bug?”

“Probably.”

“Three men?”

Victor smiled.

“Sebastian.”

“I know.”

Then:

“Why warn us?”

Victor looked older.

“Because Adrian is not my partner.”

“But he messaged you.”

“He wants one.”

“What does he offer?”

“The Vale waterfront.”

Damian’s eyes became ice.

In exchange for DeLuca protection, Adrian would expose Sebastian, discredit Damian, and take control Vale entities.

Victor shook head.

“I spent forty years competing with your family. I’m not interested in inheriting it from a boy who thinks blackmail is leadership.”

Interesting honor among rivals.

Not friendship.

Then he looked at Harper.

“Your father refused my father’s money.”

“For what?”

“Records.”

Harper’s throat tightened.

Thomas Bennett had struggled financially.

Could have taken.

Did not.

“He said?”

Victor remembered.

“Truth isn’t merchandise.”

Harper cried.

That sounded exactly like him.

They left.

Within an hour, Harper, Damian, Roman, Patricia, and police liaison arranged legal access to storage unit.

Harper was owner through estate.

They entered.

Dust.

Boxes.

Old desks.

Tax files.

Then one locked steel cabinet.

Brass key fit.

Inside:

Ledgers.

Photocopies.

Audio tapes.

And one envelope addressed:

HARPER — ONLY IF THE VALES COME LOOKING

Her hands shook.

She opened.

Her father’s handwriting.

If you are reading this, I failed to keep you outside something that never should have touched you.

Harper cried.

Then:

Do not give the original records to any Vale or DeLuca. Give them to the authorities and your own lawyer. Powerful families are very good at convincing decent people that secrecy is loyalty. It isn’t.

Damian looked away.

Thomas Bennett had written twenty years earlier what Harper had been telling him for weeks.

Then final line:

Damian Vale was a boy when this began. If he ever comes looking, remember that being born into a dangerous family is not the same as choosing to remain dangerous. Make him prove which one he is.

Harper looked at Damian.

He stared at page.

And before either could speak, Roman’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Damian.”

“What?”

May you like

“Vale House is on fire.”

Sebastian was still inside.
