Plot twist

Chapter 9 - THE FIRE AT VALE HOUSE

Damian arrived to flames climbing from the second-floor windows.

Fire crews already surrounded Vale House.

Roman had called emergency services before leaving storage facility.

No private heroics.

Still, Damian tried crossing barrier.

A firefighter stopped him.

“My uncle is inside.”

“Crews are searching.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

Damian’s face became terrifying.

Harper caught his arm.

“Let them work.”

He looked at her.

For once, he listened immediately.

Minutes became unbearable.

Then firefighters brought Sebastian out.

Alive.

Unconscious.

Smoke inhalation.

Burns on one arm.

No life-threatening injury according to initial assessment.

Damian exhaled for first time.

Investigators quickly determined fire started in library.

Accelerant suspected.

Security system disabled eight minutes before ignition.

Adrian had access.

But assumptions were not proof.

Sebastian regained consciousness that night.

Damian stood beside hospital bed.

Harper waited outside until invited.

Sebastian opened eyes.

“Ledger?”

“Safe.”

“Records?”

“Thomas Bennett had copies.”

Sebastian looked toward Harper.

“You found.”

“Yes.”

He smiled weakly.

“Your father was better man than us.”

Harper did not answer.

Then Damian:

“Did Adrian do this?”

Sebastian closed eyes.

“Yes.”

“You saw him?”

“He came.”

“What did he want?”

“Ledger.”

“Then?”

“I refused.”

Sebastian swallowed painfully.

“He said I had spent his whole life choosing you.”

Damian froze.

Adrian’s resentment.

Sebastian’s son had watched father raise cousin.

Why?

Because Damian inherited.

Because Sebastian felt responsible.

Maybe Adrian felt replaced.

Explanation.

Not excuse.

“He said if I loved Vale history so much, I could burn with it.”

Harper shivered.

Damian’s eyes turned dark.

“Police.”

Sebastian looked at him.

“Yes.”

No family handling.

Growth.

“I’ll give statement.”

Then:

“Damian.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

Not only fire.

Twenty years.

Vincent.

Lie.

Everything.

Damian’s face broke.

“I know.”

“Do you forgive?”

Silence.

Harper looked away.

Not her moment.

Damian said:

“Not tonight.”

Sebastian nodded.

Fair.

The evidence from Thomas Bennett’s archive reshaped everything.

Records showed:

Vincent Vale’s hidden debt.

Antonio DeLuca’s repayment demands.

Property transfer drafts.

Thomas’s notes expressing concern.

A recorded conversation between Vincent and Thomas three days before death.

Vincent:

Sebastian thinks he can save everything. He doesn’t understand DeLuca owns us if I don’t sign.

Thomas:

Then tell Damian.

Vincent:

He’s seventeen.

Thomas:

He’s already living consequences.

Damian cried hearing.

His father had been flawed.

Afraid.

Secretive.

Not myth.

Then another tape.

Thomas speaking to Sebastian after Vincent’s death.

You said it was accident.

Sebastian:

It was.

Thomas:

Then stop letting Antonio use it to control you. Tell police everything.

Sebastian:

And lose Damian? Lose Vale?

Thomas:

If keeping family requires lying to everyone in it, what exactly are you keeping?

Harper covered her mouth.

Her father again.

Then Sebastian:

You don’t understand.

Thomas:

I understand numbers. And every number here says fear is costing more than truth would.

That line became key.

Sebastian chose secrecy.

Antonio blackmailed.

Adrian later discovered.

Twenty years of consequences.

Police reopened review of Vincent’s death, though limitations and evidentiary issues made outcome complex.

Sebastian voluntarily gave complete statement.

Whether charges possible after two decades would be determined.

He did not ask Damian to interfere.

Then Adrian disappeared.

Bank accounts frozen where lawful.

Passport flagged? Authorities handle.

No cinematic bounty.

Police and federal financial investigators traced contractor network.

Missing twenty-seven million divided:

Nine million Sebastian paid under blackmail-related arrangements.

Eleven million Adrian siphoned through fraudulent invoices.

Seven million routed into investments connected to DeLuca-affiliated contractors, some legitimate mixed.

Messy.

Real.

Victor cooperated where it served him.

Not hero.

Then Harper returned to flower shop.

Damian wanted her relocate permanently.

She said no.

He accepted.

Security system upgraded.

She paid portion.

Damian’s people covered threat-specific measures by agreement.

Contracts.

Boundaries.

Then one evening, Damian arrived alone.

No Roman.

No SUV parked front.

He brought flowers.

Terrible arrangement.

Harper stared.

“Did you make that?”

“Yes.”

“It looks injured.”

“I tried.”

She laughed.

“What are they?”

“Peonies.”

“Those are roses.”

He looked.

“Roman lied.”

Harper laughed harder.

Then he became serious.

“I need to tell you something.”

She stopped.

“I knew your father’s name.”

“What?”

“Not before background check.”

Her face changed.

“I saw Bennett Accounting Services in old records after Roman gave me file.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“I didn’t know connection mattered.”

“But you investigated.”

“Yes.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

She exhaled.

Damian did not defend.

“I’m sorry.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I keep making mistakes.”

“That’s less charming than you think.”

“I know.”

Then:

“I don’t want you involved because you kissed me.”

Her heart skipped.

“Damian.”

“I want you involved because every time my family says control is protection, you call it what it is.”

She stared.

“That sounds like hiring consultant.”

He smiled.

“No.”

Then stepped closer.

Not touching.

“I want to kiss you when neither of us is trying to save anyone.”

Harper’s breath caught.

“Ask properly.”

“Can I kiss you?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

This kiss was nothing like alley.

Slow.

Chosen.

His hands stayed at her waist only after she moved closer.

No rain.

No attackers.

No audience.

When they separated, Harper whispered:

“That was better.”

Damian almost smiled.

“Useful?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

Then shop window shattered.

Both dropped instinctively.

A brick hit floor.

Wrapped around it:

A photograph of Harper’s father.

Across his face, black marker.

HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT QUIET. SO SHOULD YOU.

Adrian was still watching.

And now he knew Thomas Bennett’s archive had been found.
