Plot twist

Part 2: The Silent Setup

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room as the digital text flashed on the screen.

Diego tried to stand up, his hands still trembling as he adjusted his wet collar.

"Give me my phone, Mariana. It's just a work text."

"A work text from a planner, Diego?" I asked, my thumb sliding the phone into my own pocket.

His mother, Sophia, stepped into the living room, her expensive gold bracelets clinking together as she glared at me.

"You attacked my son in his own apartment, you ungrateful girl. The neighbors heard everything."

"The neighbors heard your son threatening to control my life and my salary with a leather belt, Sophia," I said.

My voice cut through her performance like a sharp blade.

"We have security footage from the hallway," she sneered, her lips twisting into a confident, mocking smile.

"It shows you pulling a weapon out of your sports bag before Diego even moved."

I looked down at the worn handles of the nunchaku in my hand.

I had been training since I was eight years old in my father's dojo in Cholula.

I was taught to recognize the exact geometry of an ambush before the first blow ever landed.

The locked deadbolt on the door.

The deliberate argument near the window where the curtains were pulled wide open.

And the specific, rehearsed phrasing about "correcting" my behavior.

This hadn't been a sudden burst of domestic rage from a controlling husband.

It was a carefully staged corporate execution.

"The school district," I whispered, the final piece of the ledger falling into place.

"Your family doesn't own a real estate firm, Sophia. They own the private academy network that’s been trying to buy out my father's land."
