The remaining color drained entirely from Diego’s face.

"If I'm charged with a violent felony, my father's dojo trust automatically defaults to my legal spouse under the pre-nuptial contract," I said.

"The very contract you and your mother forced me to sign before the wedding."

I walked slowly toward the couch, the wood smooth beneath my bare feet.

"Mariana, please," Diego stammered, taking a panicked step backward. "We can settle this. It was my mother's idea."

"Shut up, Diego!" Sophia snapped, her eyes flashing with pure malice as she reached into her designer purse.

"It doesn't matter what she knows. The police are already on their way. The report is logged."

"The report is logged, yes," I said, pulling my own phone from my dress pocket. "But not the one you think."

I opened the live streaming application on my screen.

The app had been recording our entire interaction from a tiny camera lens hidden in the zipper pouch of my sports bag.

The video hadn't just saved to the local device.

It had been transmitted directly to the Atlantic National Bank fraud compliance network, where my brother worked as a senior auditor.

"The state district attorney received the full audio of your phone conversation with Brenda from last night, Sophia," I announced.

I looked at her, refusing to show an ounce of pity.

The front door suddenly shook with a heavy, authoritative knock.

Sophia smiled triumphantly, stepping toward the deadbolt. "You're too late, Mariana. The narrative is already written."
